My wife & I went in Feb and it was snow everywhere. We are not strangers to snow, but this was very pretty. This onsen is in a quiet village and almost secluded. We took the public bus from the railway station (you will get the tickets inside the station and the nice lady at the tourist info center is... More

Taenoyu is a small but quaint and modern ryokan, it is comfortable. It has an excellent onsen, especially the mixed one which is open-air. You can enjoy the beautiful landscape of the waterfall as well as the forest there. Also, there is another private onsen which has similar landscape, but you have to book it in advance. I have been... More

Beautiful ryokan - think it's quite modern in the setup. Upon check-in, the staff (think it was waga-San) the gentleman with spectacles gave us a thorough brief on the set up off the inn. Explained in details the onsen and where/what the meal times were. Very meticulous and thorough. They have a private outdoor bath which you can make reservations... More

Nyuto Onsen Pass Other than Tsurunoyu Onsen , Taenoyu is the other onsen I like very much . I bought the Nyuto Onsen Pass at 1550¥ (S$18) and went as a day trippers to the Onsen . The Nyuto Onsen allows me to use the 7 onsens at Nyuto Onsen with transportation thrown it . Just get the van schedule... More

Taenoyu is a small to medium sized onsen on the main road in Nyuto onsen - the bus stops right outside and it's very easy to find if driving. It's a bit more on the elegant than rustic side and has some European decor such as paintings and ornaments though the rooms are Japanese style with tatami and futon and... More

We came to the Nyuto onsen (hot springs) area for the natural beauty of the mountains and an experience in a traditional hot springs ryokan. Our family of three loved it and I highly recommend Taeno-Yu for anyone looking for that combination. My son, 21, speaks Japanese but you should be aware that none of the staff speaks English aside... More

Taenoyu is located near the end of an isolated road, beside a river. The rooms are typical for a ryokan, reasonably well-maintained and of decent size. There are six onsen baths of varying temperatures, and the mixed gender baths are truly remarkable. The service was warm, cheerful, helpful, and attentive, although not particularly English-fluent. The meals were great. There is... More

We made a day visit as the ryokan was fully booked. Reception was excellent. Having stayed the night before in no-frills Tsurunoyu, the facilities here made our day; we had a decent shower here! The mixed rotenburo has a great view of the waterfall but the water quality was so-so, not as good as the milky white sulphur onsen in... More

I think the burden of dealing with day visitors shows - this is not a place you would go for peaceful relaxation. Overall the service was just ok, meals were very nice & served with efficiency but I thought the staff lacked the warm & welcoming professionalism that you get in most Japanese inns. Reception were very disorganised upon our... More

There are many different types of hot springs available in the lodge plus at the neighboring area. The rooms are clean and neatly decorated. Foods are fresh and local. Local Sake is also served upon our request. The staff is very friendly. This place is especially beautiful to visit during the winter when you can enjoy hot springs by watching... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Taenoyu is a unique onsen in that men and women never miss out on any of the five baths available: the separate bath locations for men and women switch every evening. The open-air bath, which is gender mixed, feels like an infinity pool, and overlooks a giant waterfall at the edge of the space. With a backdrop of mountains covered with trees, the outdoor bath area immerses you in all of the natural beauty that Akita has to offer. One indoor bath has a rock-lined edge filled with orange-golden color water, and is almost an open-air bath itself, providing a view of the forest outside its wooden overhang. Another indoor bath is filled with stones and clear water, allowing you to experience a foot massage when you press your feet against the bottom of the bath. As you enter the ryokan, before taking the baths, enjoy an afternoon tea in the dining area also used to serve breakfast, with a view of a small river and various trees stretching across the mountain. A separate dining area is available for dinner, where many of Akita’s famous dishes, including kiritanpo and sansai, are served. The multi-course dinner is complemented with Akita’s local sake, or nihonshu, produced from Akita-grown rice and pure spring water. ... more   less
