Detailed Reviews
We just had a very enjoyable stay with Mike and Tamami in their wonderfully appointed Myoko Mountain Lodge. Their hospitality was outstanding, from the pickup from the train station, drops offs to the rental shop, ski spoles and restaurants at night. Mike and Tamami truly go above and beyond.
Breakfast was great. Lots of variety from fresh fruit, cereal, hot porridge, breads with fresh jams. Tamami kindly offered her us hot eggs every morning as well. Could not fault it!
Dinner at the lodge every second night was special. We made our own japanese pancake okonomiyaki one night and also had a make your own sushi night with the freshest ingredients you could possibly imagine. A definate highlight of the trip.
The lodge itself if beutifully appointed. We had a couple of room upstairs and they were a good size. Certainly enough space to spread our stuff out without feeling cramped. The 2 x Japanese baths were a great touch and very nice after a hard days skiiing. I never encountered a line. I think this is due to the lodge size. It only has 9 rooms so doesn't feel crowded.
The location to the ski feilds is pretty good. It isn't right at the bottom of the ski slope but is not too far away. The impact of this is lessened if you book your rental gear through the recommended rental hire place. They allow you to leave your skiis and poles at the bottom of one of the nearby chair-lifts. Mike gaves us ski boot bags at a small cost. Combine the 2, and walking back to the lodge in gum boots, minus your skiis and poles is awesome! On the last day, Mike took care of all the hirte gear and dropped it back for us.
It's the culmination of all of these small touches, and warm and freindly hospitality shown by Tamami and Mike that makes the Myoko Mountain lodge such a wonderful place to stay. I would highly recommend to anyone!

We loved it here! Tamami and Michael looked after us so well, not just from the time we arrived but right back from the time I made the booking.
Tamami accommodated my vegetarianism and food intolerances. The breakfasts were varied and so fresh and tasty, combination of continental and cooked. We were fortunate to have 3 home cooked meals during our stay also - MYO sushi, Shabu Shabu for NYE and Okonomiyaki.
We slept in a Japanese style room and were so on for tables the room was big and had sufficient storage.
Shared seperate women’s and men’s toilets, two relaxing Furo (Japanese baths), spotless basin/bench area. In fact I do t think I saw a spec of dust or dirt the whole time we were there.
There was a nice little selection of beer and wine in the lounge for purchase and it was a very nice communal area to relax and make new friends with the other guests and families who were also staying.
Michael’s attention to safety detail doesn’t go unnoticed, small little gestures to make sure risks of slipping and tripping are minimised (you probably wouldn’t notice these details but I have a safety background so appreciated them).
Michael shuttled us to the lifts each day but we chose to walk back, it’s an easy walk back, not too far and nice to be in nature a little longer.
Tamami and Michael go above and beyond. Their hospitality style is contemporary and warm - something to be so grateful for but never taken for granted.
Tamami had a little extra patience to help me learn and understand my Japanese language skills a little better during our conversations.
Tamami’s mum who was also hosting us was an absolute diamond.
With so much thanks it was hard to say goodbye. We will be back, next time with our families and a car so we can explore the nearby areas.

We had a fantastic stay at Myoko Mountain Lodge. Everything we needed in one cosy, well appointed lodge. Walking distance to the village and it's restaurants and ski lifts makes for a great location. Transfers to the lifts are provided if you'd rather not walk. Tamami and Michael are wonderful hosts. We were treated like family. They go above and beyond to make their guests feel welcome and comfortable. Complimentary station transfers are an appreciated inclusion. Thank you Tamami and Michael. We will be back.

I stayed here with my cousin while we were in the area to ski. Our room was about the size of a dorm room, with a set of bunk beds, reading lights, a dresser, a full-length mirror, and a place to hang your clothes. The comforters on the beds are so soft and warm. The toilets, sinks, and showers are communal, but were very clean, and sharing with others was completely fine. Shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, and hairdryers are provided. There's a common area where guests gather in the evening for card and board games and conversation. A hot breakfast is served in the common area every morning. There's a room to keep ski and snowboard equipment and dry out your wet ski clothing. Akakura Onsen, the closest ski resort, is a short drive away. Michael (Australian) and Tamami (Japanese), the owners, speak English and were very hospitable. Tamami recommended restaurants in the area and made reservations for us. Michael brought my suitcase out to my car when I departed. Tamami ran up to my room to bring me my coat when I had forgotten it. Michael and Tamami take a picture of each guest that stays there to keep in their guest book. What I liked best about my stay was the hospitality of Michael and Tamami and also the opportunity to hang out with the other guests, because it's such a communal atmosphere. You would not find that at a regular hotel. I would definitely recommend this place to others and would stay there if in the area again.

I had a wonderful 9 day stay here. Tamami and Michael were very attentive, thorough and welcoming hosts who went above and beyond, and made me feel like family. Tamami is super caring and cooks a wonderful breakfast (and I recommend the delicious dinners too, especially if she offers sushi night!) and Michael was very efficient shuttling me around and offered lots of practical advice. It's in a quiet woodland area, walking distance to Akakura kanko/onsen ski resorts (and 20 mins walk to Akakura town) or they can often shuttle you. Highly recommended! Thanks guys, I hope to visit again!

We stayed at Myoko Mountain Lodge for 3 nights over Christmas and it was easily the highlight of our 2 weeks in Japan. Tamami and Michael are wonderful hosts and nothing was too much trouble for them. Michael collected us from the railway station and delivered us back on our departure, ferried us to the ski hire shop and took us to the local onsen. Tamami provided a fantastic Shabu Shabu Christmas dinner and recommended and booked a fantastic Japanese/Italian fusion restaurant for us on Christmas Eve. It was so nice to be in such a welcoming place for Christmas. We would highly recommend Myoko Mountain Lodge.

Our first trip to Japan and our kids first ski trip. We felt at home from the moment we arrived. Tamami guided us in to Akakura with reassuring communication that Michael would be at the station to pick us up and drive us into Akakura Onsen. Michael filled us in on where to get cash, advised to book restaurant dinners ahead (I tried, I really did!), where to get coffee and even escorted us in to Myoko Snowsports to pick up the rentals like rockstars. The gorgeous Tamami greeted us with a big smile and showed us to our room. Beds were comfortable and cosy with plenty of space for all the gear. Bathrooms were immaculately clean and the onsen was a welcome luxury at the end of the day skiing. Breakfast were delicious and good sized. Snacks and beer, wine and soft drink available for happy hour in the communal lounge were you are sure to meet some lovely fellow travellers. Michael and Tamami’s care for their guests was extraordinary. Apart from their invaluable knowledge of the area they are really interested in making your stay great. From Tamami assisting with finding, ringing and booking somewhere to eat when I had left it quite late, to Michael’s insistence we take high- vis vests and torches for the short walk home from the village in the dark. They were always interested in how our day had been and if we need help with plans for the next day. The kids loved the feeling of “being at home” and the great breakfasts, and the onsen.
We were genuinely sad to leave and are planning our next trip back. Thanks so much Michael and Tamami.

I have stayed a Myoko Mountain Lodge twice and both times it was a marvelous experience. Michael and Tamami, the couple who run the lodge are warm and welcoming. Tamami's cooking is wonderful; Michael is always willing to pick you up or send you to the station or the ski fields. The atmosphere in the dining and lounge area is warm and cozy, and a great place to meet other guests from around the world. The lodge is sparkling clean, tastefully decorated, and run very efficiently. It is located about 10 minutes' walk from Akakura Kanko ski resort, and by car 5 minutes to Akakura Onsen village and ski area, 5 to 10 minutes to Ikenodaira ski area and 10 to 15 minutes to Suginohara ski area.

Myoko mountain lodge exceeds all expectations. The host’s priority are very clearly the needs of their guests. Michael provides a reliable and punctual shuttle service from first arrival in Myoko, to daily rides to ski areas first thing in the morning (following a delicious breakfast of course). Tamami’s cooking is the best we found in our travels, skipping a dinner simply was not an option. The rooms and common areas are maintained to a level of cleanliness that will satisfy even the pickiest of travellers.
The hosts knowledge of the area helped us achieve an excellent ski vacation despite the low level snowpack.
Myoko Mountain Lodge will be the only accommodation I consider for any future trip to the area.

My husband and I had the pleasure of two nights at Myoko Mountain Lodge just recently. So wish it could have been more.
Michael and Tamami Bullock are wonderful, generous, thoughtful hosts who have created a beautiful mountain lodge. The attention to detail in the rooms and bathroom areas are stunning and so enjoyed by us. We had the fortune of having the traditional Japanese room with a futon bed which was visually stunning and very comfortable. The views from the windows are beautiful in autumn, can only imagine how spectacular they would be in winter. The lodge dining area is intimate and homely. The cooking done by Tamami is so delicious. She went to great effort to produce beautiful Japanese and western food for us. Michael is a real character with a great sense of humour. We did some great walks/hikes with him and he was very knowledgeable about the area. Cannot recommend Myoko Mountain Lodge highly enough. Michael and Tamami are so friendly and welcoming and will go out of their way to make your time there enjoyable, memorable and definitely a highlight of your trip. You won’t be disappointed!
