This lodge is the perfect place for people who want to make friends on their trip to Japan. Whilst Sugi is away from the main action (bars etc.) in Myoko over at Akakura, it has some of the best quality terrain and longest runs anywhere in the region - the lodge is just a few minutes walk from the Sugnihohara Pair Lift No.1. The lodge owners Ben and Haruka were amazing and treat every gust as a new friend who is there to share in the experience of the amazing Japanese winters. Whilst the lodge is modest from the outside, they have done an awesome job renovating the interior and it's a lovely place to spend your hours off the slopes.

The bar and lounge area is an awesome spot to chill out and have a drink after a day skiing, and there is an onsen directly adjacent to the lodge which is included in the price of your accommodation. Some evenings Ben and Haruka will put on a dinner for the guests, and occasionally parties or board game nights. It's a space to spend time talking with people, listening to music, playing pool, making friends, and not looking at your phone.

For those who are into skiing sidecountry and backcountry, Ben and Haruka know the area extremely well and can point their guests to the right locations and connect them with local guides.

I have spent a lot of time skiing in Japan, and absolutely love and recommend this lodge - my time both on and off the mountain made it one of my most memorable holidays in years.

This is a gorgeous little lodge with fantastic hosts who make the trip so enjoyable. The nearby runs are uncrowded and full of powder. It is easy to make your way to the other small ski slopes. One day they will link them and it will all be overrun. At the moment it is a local joy.

I stayed here in January and the Gozan Lodge is everything I wanted and more! The lifts are super close, rooms are really nice and the hosts are incredible! Free brekkie to set us up for the day and a super healthy dinners that I got every night cause they got better each night! The hosts even took us up the hill and showed us around the mountain so I could get the most out of my short stay. When I come back I'll be back there if there is space!
