One of the three hot springs in Japan with high level of sulfur. The water "smells" because of sulfur (or hydrogen sulfide; I am not a chemist and not in a position to say whether sulfur is the cause of the smell or hydrogen sulfide is the reason), but the flip is that the water is great. The hotel is a large one, with approximately 100 rooms, which you will not feel "personal" hospitality. That said, the service level is not bad, but you should stay at a smaller ryokan if you want to feel omotenashi. More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Tsukioka was once an uninhabited hill in the middle of the woods. In 1917, in the midst of the oil rush excitement in Niigata prefecture, hot spring water suddenly gushed from an excavating well. People said "Oil isn't found under hot water," and the oil company abandonded the well. Shuzaburo Honma noticed this hot water, established a common bath and opened a therapeutic bath inn next to it. Thus began Tsukioka Onsen. Since then, approximately 100 years of history has passed, and Tsukioka has become famous as a hot spring resort representing Niigata prefecture. ... more   less
