This hotel is only a 5 minute walk from the Kamisuwa train station. Friendly service with just enough English to get the basics. Good buffet breakfast and clean environment. The rooms are VERY small by Western standards. Literally just enough space for a bed and small table. Didn't measure, but entire room is maybe 7x10 feet. I'm 6 feet and top of my head almost touched the ceiling in the shower. Fantastic value at USD$55 a night, but it's basically a clean and friendly place to sleep.

If staying or caught near Lake Suwa, this hotel next to the station is an easy, affordable stay, with parking. A bath and rotemburo on the 1f is a plus, as was an excellent breakfast buffet. This location is not rife with dining options, so best to eat before checking in, or visit the neighborhood convenience store.

This is a "sub-motel" level establishment in a very sleepy small town. The standard room looks to be a 8'x10' space, with barely a bed, a chair, and a tiny desk. I'm 5' tall and I could barely fit. I ended up changing to a "double" room, which was more bearable. If you are staying there for a long period like I was, you should upgrade to double. Other than that, the staff was nice, but did not speak any English. On the plus side, it's literally right by the train station, making it super convenient. There is a decent Italian eatery half a block away and a Family Mart 2 blocks over that sells some fresh fruit and vegetables. I lived on this convenient store's food for the week I was there! In sum, it can work. Just be prepared to lower your expectations, bring a few pre-written Japanese phrase cards, and pack lots of granular bars. You can survive!
