Detailed Reviews
As my husband and I came to the end of our month long travels throughout Japan, we couldn't bare the thought of leaving. So we didn't. We extended our wonderful holiday and headed to the magnificent Shima Peninsula where we were rewarded with two beautiful hotel stays and some very special scenery. This region didn't appear to have many North American tourists and that's a shame because this area is stunningly beautiful and no where near as crowded as the other areas we travelled, namely Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kanazawa, Hiroshima and to some degree Shikoku Island.
This hotel is a short walk from the train station although there is a shuttle if you're unable to walk. The property grounds and gardens are gorgeous. Even in late November we were able to sit in our shirt sleeves in the garden. The lobby is so beautiful as are the employees who greet you upon your arrival. We had a corner room where we watched the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the water. The rooftop deck was also a lovely spot to watch the sunset.
Our corner room, 536, was lovely with a very comfortable bed, a well stocked tea/coffee station, a mini fridge and good size storage with a closet. The toiletries and skin care products were very nice.
One of the best things about this property is the lounge on the second floor. There are complementary food and beverages (non alcoholic and alcohol) available all day and these items change as the day progresses. The breakfast buffet is massive and excellent even for a vegetarian, well worth the price. The view from the dining room is over the water and spectacular.
One of the benefits of staying at this property is that you can also use the guest lounge at the Bay Suites Property just up the road. Their roof top deck and lounge is beautiful. The complementary food and drink offerings are the best we saw anywhere in our five week stay in Japan. This hotel is very special. Lovely room, exceptional staff!
The service at this hotel is top notch. I can't imagine being disappointed in anything about this property.

We visited to celebrate my husband's 60th birthday.
The hospitality was excellent from check-in to check-out and it was very relaxing.
The lounge had a wide selection of alcoholic drinks, which we enjoyed before and after our meal.
For dinner at La Mer, which we had been looking forward to, we ordered the san course.
Every dish, made with lavish amounts of fresh spiny lobster and abalone, was delicious and exquisite.
When we asked for a message on the dessert plate, they prepared a wonderful one decorated with gorgeous fresh flowers, which we were very grateful for.
The warm service from the hotel staff was very impressive and we are really glad we chose this hotel.

This hotel located in Kashikojima, not so far from Ise Shinto Shrine, famous for G7 Summit venue 2016. Very tranquil, beautiful landscape from all rooms, it is so perfect place to relax. Also I am so interested in such a confortable harmony with Japanese traditional side and modern.
Because of geographical reason, maybe, this area is much blessed food qualities, especially seafoods.
Therefore, you must be able to satisfied with their wide range of seafood menu. (They have dress code)
Not only staying, they offer some activities as well, yoga, jazz live etc.
Highly recommended place, I personally would like to stay here again.

What a beautiful hotel in a great location. I can see why Japan used this is a location for the G7 Summit in May 2016.
The service was impeccable, the views from the Guest Lounge were fabulous, and the hotel offers beautiful suites and rooms.
I congratulate and thank the hotel management of Miyako Hotels for a great experience.

Otherwise pleasant stay marred by poor management behavior.
On my morning of checkout, I was running late to a tour in Toba. Running out the door, I vacated the room, left my key, asked the bell desk to hold my luggage - and informed the front desk that I would settle the final bill upon my return from the tour.
They told me that this would be impossible, that I needed to stay and handle the payment formalities immediately. Knowing formalities in Japan, especially at high-end establishments, are handled with great attention to detail and care, this would surely make me late for the train and my tour. A manager attended to me and when I quickly explained the situation, he told me "that is not of my concern. You may not leave without paying first."
At a hotel where service is lauded, a guest's concern should be your concern - the lack of care and poor treatment from this manager shocked me and marred an otherwise pleasant stay.

The hotel is situated in a beautiful area of Japan not far from Ise Jingu. (about 20 minutes by car). The hotel restaurants are very high end so if you are looking for a reasonably priced dinner then you need to look elsewhere. It was interesting that they had the table setting for the G7 Summit where all the world leaders sat for their dinner still set up so guests could see it. Overall, very good stay.

I have great memories of this hotel when I was a young boy on a family holiday more than 30 years ago. I hope to return soon. Stunning views, very clean everywhere and beautiful spacious interior design and beautiful gardens. Unfortunately from the recent photos the grand long staircase in the lobby has been removed. I remember walking down that great staircase, the huge hallway and common areas repeatedly that seemed to go on forever . It is a bit expensive but definitely one of the best hotels I've ever stayed at.

Thank you very much for posing your review of Shima Kanko Hotel The Classic, and staying with us more than 30 years ago. In June 2016, our public area was beautifully renovated. Especially the lobby has changed a lot. Though the interior design is different from the one many guests liked before, we hope you can come back to us soon, and have a new memorable experience.

The hotel building is old but well maintained. We stayed in a Japanese-Style room and it had a new plasma TV and the bathroom also seemed that it had been refreshed in the last few years. The room was clean and they supplied nice towels (unusual for most Japanese hotels). There is not much to do around or even in the hotel. The train station is about a 5 minute walk from the hotel but there are not many shops near the station and they seem to close early so I would not recommend staying here unless you have a car (so you can drive to restaurants about 10 minutes away and avoid paying high prices for average food). The breakfast was ok but the menu was set, Japanese or Western. Seems the hotel rents bicycles and there is a boat tour of the surrounding waterways but other than that, nothing to do here. We simply used this as a place to sleep for our travel to Ise Shrine the next day (about a 40 minute drive across the mountains).

Really enjoyed my 2-night stay in a Japanese style room that I booked through JAPANICAN. Comes with breakfast and dinner at the French restaurant, La Mer. The room was just like ryokan style and it's bigger than the standard twin room. It was clean and had a great view of Ago-wan.
What I like about the place was that it's really nice to stroll in their gardens and around the old ryokan section, to see how the hotel was like a few decades ago. I must really commend the staff for their discreet but warm service, particularly at La Mer. Although I travelled solo, they made me feel comfortable and welcomed. The food was excellent. Although my package did not include Ise lobster or the famous abalone steak, I can just add this on ala carte. The selection of wines was also good. Please try the steak (10000 yen), it's really nicely marinated and juicy! The lobster cream bisque was also very tasty.
You can also shop at your own pace at the 2nd level. They have their hotel branded pearl jewellery as well as Mikimoto jewellery and cosmetics. You can also buy canned soup or prepacked abalone curry sauce by La Mer, as well as food souvenirs, e.g. scallops, Matsuzaka beef, and so on. The prices are similar to those at the Kashikojima station (about 2 shuttles every hour, just a 5-minute walk to the station anyway)
At the night when you go for your dinner, the staff will lay down the mattress and lit the traditional "night-lamp" for you, and likewise, in the morning, they will keep the mattress for you. As I spent a lot of time in my room, I had used up the tea bags during the day and without having to ask them, they replenished these in the evening. Such kind and thoughtful service makes me want to go back again!

Was taken here for lunch by a good friend. Amazingly good food and wonderful service. We had multiple courses from lobster soup, to abalone to local steak and delicious desserts. Started with a glass of Perrier Jouet champagne and followed by both red and white burgundies. I did not pay for this and I am sure it must have been very expensive but for a totally wonderful dining experience it could not be beaten.
