One of the best hotels I have ever stayed in terms of location, hospitality, food, facilities and cleanliness. If I have a chance to go back to Shimoda again, I would definitely stay at this hotel. The staff working for this hotel seemed happy and they were helpful. Very comfortable staying at this hotel.

Its beautifully located giving a real Japanese experience with futons on tatami mats, low dining table and conveniently arranged room facilities which has the magnificent view of the Shirahama beach from where we spent time watching the beautiful sunrise and life slowly unfolding on the beach..

I have three favorite hotels to stay in Shimoda, and one of them is the Izukyu hotel. Located in southern area of the Izu Peninsula, one of Japan's most outstandingly warm region. This hotel has a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. You can see the beauty of the sea from the room, set your pace to one of their relaxing hot springs, a huge swimming pool for adults and kids, & welcoming and friendly staff. Not only that! They also serve delicious fresh seafood that is beautifully prepared. Our dinner and breakfast was really good! There are two types of rooms that can be selected: the Western- style rooms and the Japanese style rooms. This hotel is a family friendly hotel. I will never get tired of going back to this place.

Stayed one night at this hotel during our drive around Izu. Wished we stayed longer cos the experience was awesome. View from the room was awesome and as with other ryokan type accommodation, we had a wonderful kaiseki dinner experience. Hotel was reasonably priced including the dinner and breakfast which were both very generous in terms of portion of food. We were definitely well fed! The wonderful view from the hotel room topped it all! Would recommend to arrive earlier than 5pm so as to see the sunset view from the comfort of your room 😁

Stayed three nights at Hotel Izukyu with my family of four. Everyone loved the hotel. Great location with beautiful views of the beach. Hotel provides shuttle every half-hour to Shimoda Station in mornings (08:30-11:00) and from station in afternoon (14:30-17:30). There is also a local bus stop on road in front of hotel, with buses providing transit to Shimoda and other locations. Check-in was easy and the staff showed us to our room. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room with a fantastic view overlooking the pool and the beach. Our room had a bathroom with tub/shower, toilet, and sink. There was also a separate vanity with a sink. Room also had a small fridge and hot water kettle. The staff preps the room for sleeping (i.e., adjusts furniture and lays out futons, comforters, and pillows (they also put away bedding and reset room in the morning). Robes and slippers are provided and you can wear these throughout hotel...even to meals! We had half-board included (breakfast/dinner) and the meals were fabulous! Breakfast is a combination of western and Japanese foods. Also have coffee, juices, and tea. Dinner is quite the experience. More food than I expected and a great variety of Japanese cuisine...sushi, hot pots, steam box, tempura, desserts, cooked fish, salad, pickled vegetables. My kids did not like sushi, so the staff graciously prepared cooked items for them. The beach is across the road from hotel, but it is only a 2-3 minute walk. There are three different crosswalks close to road entrance to hotel. There is also a 7-11 that is located next to hotel road entrance. Misc: Wi-Fi throughout hotel (rooms, lobby, pool area). There were two staff members who spoke very good english and a couple who knew enough to assist us with questions. Most of the other staff knew some basic words which, with my extremely limited knowledge of Japanese words/phrases, was enough to navigate most questions. The onsen was great, with inside and outside areas (there are separate onsens for men and women).

Nice hotel...very pricey for what they offer. No Valet, no Bellhop, no internet. No one speaks English. Great food. Great location. Excellent 5 course meal restaurant in the hotel. The location is absolutely perfect for the beach. The beach is great for surfing and boogeyman board. You do have to walk down the hill and cross the road to access beach. Lots of little eateries along the beach road. This beach is definitely off the beaten path.

First time staying here for business. I loved the dinner we were provided, a knock-down-drag-out Traditional Japanese meal with all the courses and trimmings. Tempura, Prawns, Miso, Green Tea, stuff that I didn't know what it was but it was amazing and beautifully presented. The onsen (while I'm not sure if it was a licensed true onsen or just a public bath) was delightful. In particular, the outside onsen where you could better regulate your body temperature. The rooms are traditional Japanese tatami mat rooms -- but with quite a spectacular view. If you aren't used to sleeping on the floor next to people, get over it. They have comfortable futons - it's better for your back, too.

My girlfriend decided to take me from Tokyo to shirahama as I have never visited it. She chose this hotel, and I was very happy that she did. I believe the best part about it was the swimming pool that sits at an amazing location in front of the beach. And the beach is a walking distance of 2 minutes. Facilities a bit dated like many said. I didn't like how they lock the doors after 12. I remember we were super hungry and we were not able to get to 7/11 because doors were locked. No one was sitting at the front desk to open doors for us. Also dinner was good but not so many choices But location really tops it all.

I went during Golden Week, which is a notoriously expensive time to travel in Japan. What attracted me was the reasonable rates (we did half board included breakfast and dinner), and the beautiful photos of the hotel and its pool on the website. I debated between here and Pension Sakuraya, which has rave reviews on Tripadvisor. Ultimately I chose Hotel Izukyu bc I saw they had large beds, which would be good size-wise for non-Japanese. EXCELLENT LOCATION TO BEACH AND TOWN. I wanted a hotel that is walking distance to a beach, accessible into town easily, but also fairly restful and resort-like. This hotel is literally 2 minutes walk down the driveway to one of the best beaches in Shimoda, Shirahama Beach, and it was fantastic. All rooms face the ocean, and thus have an ocean view, you can request a Japanese style room or Western style room. Access to town: there is a city bus stop right in front of the hotel, that runs very regularly, and only cost $3 per person into town, where you can rent bicycles, or eat lunch, or go to the aquarium, or go up the ropeway (cable car) to the peak. FACILITIES ARE DATED. The overall hotel facilities except for the onsen (hot springs) which was renovated in 2009 are quite dated. I don't believe any renovations have been done for many years. From the rooms, to the dining halls, to the lobby area, to the pool. The photos on the website have been embellished I believe, thus I would take those photos with a grain of salt. However, outside of being data, there is nothing wrong with the facilities. The rooms are much larger than I am used to for Japanese hotels, and the beds are larger (full size beds as opposed to the usual twin size you get in Japan). The facilities/rooms are clean. ONSEN IS BEAUTIFUL. The newly renovated onsen, renovated in 2009, is a beautiful facility. There is a large bath area that is indoors, and there is an onsen that is outdoors, which looks out onto a little garden. It is very peaceful, and very relaxing, and definitely one of the best aspects of the hotel. You can still smell the lovely woody smell from the beams and wooden structure. I would rate the onsen a 5 out of 5. FOOD IS FINE. Food quality is fine, actually dinner was fairly good and the portions quite ample (even okay for non-Japanese). Breakfast is buffet-style, typical of Japanese hotels, mix of Japanese and Western. Dinner is served in a large dining hall or conference room type place, and it's fairly early - you must be seated by 7pm and finish by 8pm at the latest. It is a combination of a set menu, plus options that you can exchange for coupons. The dessert buffet was especially fun. However, the dining hall is not a very intimate setting, perhaps, because you're literally in a large dining hall with maybe 100 other guests. FUN AND ACTIVITIES. We spent half the time on the beach, swimming, taking walks, sun tanning. However, the other half of the time we took the bus into town and rented bicycles and explored as far as we could go. If you have children, the Aquarium is quite fun. If you are active and outdoorsy, I definitely recommend riding the bicycles out to Tsumeki-zaki (爪木崎)Lighthouse, which is part of the Izu-Hakone National Park. There are many uphills and downhills along the way, fyi.
