Rooms are very neat and well kept. We have a great appreciation for the copper pipe works and taps…Kids enjoyed the free wifi. Kitchen and braai/bbq facilities are great. We were welcomed by Heidi, friendly and efficient. We will return for sure.

Chris, the owner, has put so much attention to the details that make a stay at Evening Shade so comfortable. The beds are perfect, the linens of high quality and the decor is a pleasure. Don’t be put off by the outside, it’s the inside that counts and it charms you. His hospitality is second to none, the morning we had breakfast, he made it himself and it was really delicious. He has homemade bread, in many other places we stayed, we received not very nice basic supermarket bread. He makes an excellent cappuccino- also not a given in Namibia. You will also love viewing his photographs and asking him about his extensive mineral collection.

Very nice and friendly reception. Good room, even though it was a little chilly in the room during night in mid July.. I can highly recommend this place! To TripAdvisor: WHY do I have to write 200?? A good review can be short!! Change this demand please!

Thank you Toby, Our buildings are designed to get rid of heat, something they do very well, even in July! Sadly in order to keep our costs down I cannot provide in room heat during the winter, which is why we have extra warm fluffy blankest for every bed. Thank you very much for your comments and we'll leave a light on, on the porch for you...

We stopped here for a night to break up our journey from Swakopmund to Windhoek. This comfortable and quiet place was just what we needed to relax at the end of our 9-day road trip before heading home. Everything was clean and ready for us when we arrived around 2:00pm. The room had character and charming decor. The bed was comfortable. The shower was spacious with great water pressure and hot water. A combined air conditioning/heating unit and extra blankets were provided for temp control. The kitchen and dining area were a nice perk also, and if we'd been there longer we would've made use of it. Parking was spacious and easy (parking with a pick-up truck was difficult at some lodges but not here). There was some confusion on our end about breakfast because we'd booked through Hotels.com and it said it was included, but I suppose it isn't. However, the owner Chris was kind enough to make us breakfast on a whim which we really appreciated. Everything was great and we'd happily recommend this place to others. Thanks for the hospitality!

So...I have this friend I went to the University of Idaho with. He runs a guest house in Namibia. After a 2 week self-drive tour with three other people I didn't know that well, I needed two things: a little peaceful solitude and decent conversation with an old mate. I got that plus so much more. Chris Johnston's place is a marvel. The room with self catering kitchen next to the garden center plus the company of the resident 4 pawed family is just what I needed to restore my spirit before a final week in the road. And it's not just the accommodation that "Wows"...my mate is a talented professional photographer and gemologist. You will not be disappointed with any offering from the gallery, be it a photo or one of the spectacular semi- precious or precious stones on display. So glad I stopped by to visit. Go Vandals!

This hotel was a refreshing stop on our journey. Chris is a very welcoming and engaging host. The self catering rooms are complete with a full kitchen, the refrigerator is fully stocked with beverages and the bedrooms are spacious. The beds are very comfortable with warm down comforters. We had a very good night sleep. The bathroom is spacious with a warm shower, shampoo, body gel and conditioner included. The grounds are welcoming. The two dogs Gracie and Bug are very friendly. Chris could not be a better host, ensuring at all times that his guests are comfortable, always inquiring if there’s anything more he can do for us or anything else we need to be comfortable. It was also very interesting hearing about his life in Namibia. Chris’s gallery is very interesting, showcasing pictures of the native Namibian population (tribes) as well as the wild animals. His restaurant serves up a complete breakfast. Because we were coming in late and there are not many restaurants in Omaruru, Chris was able to accommodate us by serving us dinner. I’m vegetarian and he made me a lovely pasta and Larry had chicken and would also very highly recommend Chris’s secret recipe for New York cheesesteak! Overall I highly recommend Evening Shade. It was a wonderful wonderful place to stay where we felt very at ease & peaceful.

Stayed one night and just loved the place. The rooms are renovated with a great attention to detail and a love for the history the place has - ask Chris about it and you will get stories and tales from history that are what traveling is about. The breakfast (in the Main Cafe) is fabulous. Some of our group also camped and it was great to have this opportunity, too. Thanks for the great time!

We checked in on a Friday evening and had made prior arrangements for dinner. Chris prepared a really tasty meal and we were able to order home made cake for dessert. The stay was very comfortable and the rooms were spotless. We loved everything about the place especially the attention detail and friendly staff. A really great place to stay when in Omaruru.
