#1 of 6 hotels in Champasak Town
Travelers' Choice
The River Resort is located on 400 meters of naturally landscaped Mekong River frontage in the south of Laos, close to the renowned Wat Phou UNESCO World Heritage site. The Resort's architecture and decor are contemporary Southeast Asian. 22 of its 28 guest rooms have stunningly beautiful, panoramic views of the Mekong River; and the other 6 have fine views of beautiful evergreen rice paddy, flowering trees and tranquil ponds. Each guest room has an indoor and an outdoor shower and other high-standard amenities. The Resort’s open-air Dining Sala, overlooking the Mekong, includes a restaurant offering Western and Laotian/Thai cuisine, alfresco dining on its Riverfront lawns, a cocktail/juice bar, and a rooftop lounge for private meetings. Two infinity swimming pools and the Resort’s onsite Spa complement a relaxing stay. Its two private Riverboats offer casual journeys on the Mekong and sunset cocktail cruises, including - when the Mekong is at ebb - spectacular sunsets viewed from a soft sand beach on a remarkable uninhabited, sandstone island offshore the Resort. The River Resort is an ecologically and environmentally responsible hotel, committed to the use of replenishable bamboo for most of its furniture, organic and hydroponic "farm to table" gardens, recycling of inorganic waste, composting of other waste, as well as solar heated hot water for its kitchens; and is also committed to the improvement of the education of its local staff and the livelihood of its local community.

The resort is set on a beautifully and carefully crafted block of land next to the Mekong and only a few minutes drive away from Champasak town. The resort is tastefully decorated and designed with maximum privacy in the 2 story villa setting (2 rooms per villa with separate entrances). The rooms are spacious and generates a feeling of calm and serenity. We stayed in the river facing rooms on a recent promotion which was had a 50% discount from standard room rates. Well worth the money and the view of the sunrise overlooking the Mekong from the comfort of our bed is remarkable and mesmerizing with full floor to ceiling windows. The vast amount of trees provide shade in the heat of Southern Laos and the cooling natural breeze that flows through the Mekong provides a surreal experience. This is definitely the place to relax and get away from it all. The only downfall is the water pressure - hardly any which made it difficult to shower and impossible to try out the outdoor shower. The rooms are very clean however, given the setting, there are of course lots of bugs around which didn't bother me at all. The breakfast was very solid from a more western focused a la carte menu. We didn't eat otherwise at the hotel. There are also two pools to choose from and lots of space for the kiddies to run around. At only 30 min drive away from Pakse city, I would definitely recommend this place as an alternative away from the hustle and bustle.

Hotel's Favorite
A friend and I stayed at the resort for four night in January. What a delightful stay. We both had beautiful river view rooms. The view of the sunrise was especially beautiful from these rooms. All the staff were professional, helpful, friendly and attentive to the right degree, from front of house to restaurant staff and room cleaners. The resort has a good restaurant and two pools all surrounded by well kept gardens. A perfect base for sightseeing or to just relax. If you get chance to see the local villagers light puppet show, I would highly recommend it. Reception are eager to help you plan your stay.

Dear Guests of The River Resort in the south of Laos. We thank you very much for the generous review you have posted on TripAdvisor. We note that you stayed with us for 4 nights and had "a delightful stay", with beautiful Mekong sunrises; professional staff, helpful and friendly "to the right degree", from front of house to restaurant staff and room caretakers; good cuisine; two infinity swimming pools, one for the sun and the other for cool swimming, both in well-kept gardens. We are pleased to hear that you found the Resort a "perfect" base for sightseeing or pure relaxation. We are happy that you dropped by the local villagers' puppet show in the evening, and found it very pleasing. The performers all thank you for coming! With our best wishes for your return to your home in New Zealand. Please do come again to meet us if you are ever nearby The River Resort. You will be welcome by all of our team! Cordially, David (Managing Director)

Let’s say first off that the staff were great but there was a real lack of management here. Everything was almost acceptable but nothing was really great. Food was ok, portions were enormous. Drinks were ok. The “sunset river cocktail cruise” was a beer on a boat! Rooms were not very clean and the small amount of laundry we had done came back looking worse. The staff were great and very friendly but if I owned this place I would shake it up!!

Dear Traveller to the River Resort, Thank you for your opinion that our staff are "great" and very friendly. Other than that, you seem to have felt that everything else was "almost" acceptable, but nothing was "really great". Food was "OK", but portions were "enormous". Alcoholic Beverages were also "OK". Your Guest Room was said by you to be not very clean and your laundry was apparently looking worse after it was returned to you. You also noted that our Sunset Cruise was simply "a beer on a boat". Did you not then notice a stunning Sunset over the Mekong River and Wat Phou, our UNESCO World Heritage site? Not to be missed next time! Altogether, our staff and management at The River Resort wish you the best of luck as you complete your journey abroad. Sayonara, David D (Managing Director)

After travelling around this area of Laos for a while, the prices at the River Resort may seem pretty high, but you really get what you pay for. The resort is lovely with beautiful river views and clean, spacious rooms (and comfortable beds! Such a relief after a few weeks of rock hard mattresses!). The staff are all excellent, the food is good and the house cocktails were really tasty. I borrowed a bike and made the trip to Wat Phou, which was tough in the heat but totally doable. You get the same sort of one-speed that the locals ride. You get two bottles of water in the room, and this will be replenished later if required. When I asked, I was able to take a jug of water from the restaurant instead so that I didn't need to go through any more plastic bottles. As an eco place, it would be nice to see jugs of water provided by default, with bottles on request.

We appreciate that you found our Resort "lovely", spacious , clean and comfortable; with an "excellent" staff; good food (with tasty house cocktails); and offering all the amenities for a 3+ star hotel. We are pleased that you borrowed a complimentary bicycle from our Front Office to make a several hour journey to Vat Phou, a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site.
