The Rondo Retreat sets the standard for lodging and service. It is located in the beautiful Kakagema Forest, and has many wonderful trails leading right from the retreat. The historic chalets are impeccably well cared for. The food is fantastic. The service is incredible. This retreat really is a little bit of heaven and is a wonderful place to become closer to God. Highest recommendation possible

What a glowing review. Thank you so very much indeed for your high commendation. We are always thrilled when our guests thoroughly enjoy their stay with us. It makes all the behind the scenes work worthwhile and is of great encouragement to all the staff. Indeed the forest is a treasure trove of flora and fauna - specific to this unique and beautiful rainforest - the only one in Kenya.

This really is a retreat - I extended my stay an extra day just to absorb the quiet and rhythm of the days. I’ve read the negative reviews of being overpriced etc - but to me (and I don’t have ‘hard currency’)’ Rondo offers astonishing value for money: three meals plus afternoon tea, and impeccable 50s/style accommodation where your solitude is respected. Even if birds, rainforest etc is not your area of interest, everyone can benefit from an afternoon or two on the stoep, reading, just being. The staff are kind and warm but not intrusive. The meals are lovely (but if you don’t like fairly traditional English style meals then this is not for you. If you’re there on a Sunday, join the chapel service in the morning. And don’t miss a sunrise walk. Note: Rondo does not have credit card services, but you can pay online (don’t have to carry cash other than for tips). The center is not licensed for alcohol, but bring your own and keep in the kitchen fridge.

Thanks so much Gail for this lovely review. So kind. We are always encouraged to hear of well satisfied guests, for we do work hard to ensure this. So glad that you find it to be good value for money - and indeed we endeavor to make it such! It is a unique, beautiful and peaceful spot - one of a kind - in a forest wonderland! Just thought that you and other readers would like to be in the picture; we do have a extensive menu of cuisine from around the world - from Africa to Asia, Indian to Italian and more! And we do accommodate special dietary needs. I hope that is helpful. Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts. We do trust that your experience and enjoyment will be echoed by most, if not all, of our future guests!

I did not go this time as it is too expensive. I have been many times in the past and enjoyed it. But the road is long and very rough. The accommodation is good and surroundings beautiful. But it's far too expensive now. The price has been increasing and now it's just too much and moot worth it. A shame......

Thanks for sharing Mary-Jane, though I am sorry to hear that you did not come for a visit due to travel and cost. The roads are all in a much better condition than previously, I am pleased to say - though they can be busy with traffic. I am glad that you have enjoyed our hospitality many times in the past. I am sorry that you felt that the price was too expensive for you. We actually have kept our prices at a very fair rate. They have remained static - with no increase - for the past 4 years, despite the fact that there has been a great deal of inflation in Kenya! When compared to the inflation and any other hotel of our caliber I do believe that we are more than fair, for it covers full board, including all meals and afternoon tea and cake! Of course it is good to note that one usually gets the best rate when booking directly with us. And of course the sharing rate is always better than the single occupancy rate. We do endeavour to do our best to accommodate our guests. Perhaps you will decide to come another time! We hope so!

The chalets / lodges are a throwback in time - one feels taken back to the 1950s staying here. The rooms are maintained to a very high standard and there are fascinating pictures and artefacts to take your interest which relate to the Christian heritage. I was fascinated by photos of the Emperor of Abyssinia (Haile Selassie) with some British missionary types. The grounds are beautifully manicured and maintained - but I didn't appreciate the noise of the two stroke blower machines and grass cutters drowning out birdsong. Why not employ more villagers to work the grounds in a more environmentally-friendly way? The meals were excellent and served by immaculately dressed (male) waiters. The lack of female employment was noticeable and a little odd but no doubt relates to the Christian ownership and ethos. Birdwatching is outstanding - the road is the best place rather than delving deep into the forest itself. Your guide will advise. I would love to return here.

Thank you so much for taking time to do a review. We really do appreciate this. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay with us at Rondo. It is a bit like stepping back in time, in some ways. Rondo fits in with the timeless essence of the forest. Yes, a place such as ours also has some interesting history, and part of that history does indeed include Ethiopia. Well spotted! So glad you enjoyed the indoors as well as the outdoors, the gardens and the forest beyond - with all of its inhabitants. The bird song is so very melodious - it's like a concert of Mozart's music from dawn to dust! The hornbills add to the cacophony! So glad that you had a successful birdwatching experience. The butterflies have been abundant - thanks to the rain. The monkeys are in and out of the gardens. There is always something to see! We are sorry to hear that you were disturbed by the lawnmower. (We don't have a blower machine though). We really do try to avoid disturbing our guests, but in order to maintain well manicured lawns, a good cut is needed on occasions. We have a good number of gardeners to keep up with the work as it is. Again, many thanks for your time and thoughts, and we would be so happy to see you again, should you be able to visit once more. We do have a good number of repeat guests - who become friends! Karibu tena! (Welcome again!)

We were here for birding -I'm not sure why else you would be in this area - and this is pretty much the only place to stay. We really liked it - the rooms are quite old and out of date but it is very clean and well maintained. The gardens are stunning and also well maintained. It was the staff that really got to us though - they were really nice in the restaurant and in the evening they put on bow-ties and served dinner in candle light - which was really lovely. Just a warning though - they don't serve alcohol so you have to bring your own!

Thank you Carol for taking time to write a review. We do appreciate your comments. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. We do love to make our guests feel at home and at the same time feel special and a little spoilt! So glad that you enjoyed the fine dining, bow tie and all, in the evening and the attentive staff. Birding, butterfly viewing, hiking and all sorts of other foresty pursuits bring visitors from far and wide. It is amazing what hobbies and studies our guest enjoy, including study of snakes, chameleons, primates and more! Yet others just love Rondo's gardens and the peaceful ambience Rondo affords. Rondo has an interesting history. It was a private home, built way back when, and thus is furnished in keeping with its history. It blends in with the antiquity of the forest. Mind you refurbishing is always an ongoing project! We are not licensed to sell alcohol, it is true, but our guests are welcome to bring their own wine, to enjoy with their evening meal. Again, thanks for visiting us. Karibu tena - if you are in our neck of the woods!

We spent two nights at the retreat, eating good food and enjoying good service. We did the combined river walk and Lirhanda Hill-bat cave with Winston. Very beautiful, exotic and interesting place. We saw many monkeys and birds and learned about the large difference between primary and secondary rainforest. The views from Lirhanda Hill were pretty, seeing the canopy from above. One morning we ran to the hill and enjoyed the early morning views from there. The rain came down heavy on both afternoons, making driving difficult but not impossible.

We were pleased to host you Martine. So glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. That is always so rewarding for all the Rondo Team who beaver away behind the scenes to give you and all our guests a wonderful and memorable visit to the Kakamega Rain Forest. There is so much to see and so much to learn about the forest and all its residents, both feathered and furred and more besides. Glad that you managed to safely navigate the downpours! Karibu tena! Welcome back - should you visit Kenya again.

We really loved the gardens in this property and it's a great place to chill out at/stroll around if you're not after a more intensive hike. Rooms are simple and comfortable with fireplaces that they light up at night. Food was simple and tasty and they tried their best to match dietary needs. Kakamega forest can be accessed from within the property and there are a few other hikes within walking and driving distance from the property.

This place a real hidden gem in the middle of the amazing tropical Kakamega forest. As you enter the property we were awed by their amazing and well kept lawns. Their cottages are nice. Well decorated, simple yet comfortable. Their food is simple but tasty and they take care of your dietary requirements. Its essential to book in advance as they don't allow you into the property without a prior booking. The hikes into the forest are absolutely amazing. Its a beautiful forest - the only tropical forest in Kenya. I would definitely recommend the sunrise hike - on top a hill where you can see the forest and the sun rising. Worth getting up in the morning for.

Thank you so much for your kind review. We are so pleased to hear that you so enjoyed your stay with us at Rondo Retreat. It is a one-of-a-kind place, not only in Kenya, but probably the world over. A simply beautiful place, with the rain forest on your doorstep - with its own special flora and fauna! The hike up the hill to watch the sun rise is spectacular. The walk to the mighty Yala River is yet another much enjoyed hike too. And, yes, we always do request that bookings are made in advance - particularly at this rather strange time of Covid-19 - so that we can look out for the health and safety of all our guests and staff. We would not want to disappoint or turn any one away!

We are always so pleased to hear from well satisfied guests. Thank you for your very kind review. We are delighted that you enjoyed Rondo's ambience and found us to be both friendly and professional - for that is what we seek to be. Indeed, the Kakamega Rainforest has many attractions. On Saturday 17th October, Rondo in collaboration with Job - a guide of long standing and expertise- will participate in the Global Bird Day count, along with any guests who would be interested to join him. It is indeed a bird watcher's paradise, as the forest is a birding HOT SPOT. Thanks for coming for a visit!

We travelled to the Rondo Retreat with high expectations, and were not disappointed. The accommodation ( we stayed in Colobus cottage ) and gardens were wonderful and the forest trail ( we only walked the shorter one ) was incredible. Lots of bird life here,in spite of the unseasonable rain. The food was excellent, possibly the best of our 3 weeks in Kenya. Everybody was happy and friendly, including the amazing Hellam who served our wonderful meals each day. We really want to return here again before too long. Highly recommended.

Thank you Simon for your glowing tribute. We are so very pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us to the full. We really do endeavour to make our Rondo guests feel at home as they sample the beauty of this very unique forest with all its flora and fauna. It is always a joy to hear that we have succeeded. Will convey your high praise of your enjoyment of the food to the chef and cooks and to Hellam, who indeed goes out of his way to take care of our guests in his domain - the dining room. We do look forward to your return in due course. There are more parts of the forest to explore!
