18/09 Lileta Simien Mountains, Debark Ethiopia
An award winning lodge in the Simien Mountains of Ethiopia - in fact the highest hotel in Africa at 3260m. Travelers visit to see the endemic animals of the Simien Mountains (Wolf, Walia Ibex and Gelada monkey). The views are incredible and it is for this reason that the Simien National Park was the 2nd World Heritage Site to be created after Yellowstone Nat Park in 1976. In 2016 Simien Lodge was awarded the Skal International Silver prize for rural accommodation. We were also given the World Travel Market African Sustainable Tourism 2nd place for poverty aleviation.

Thank you. We will settle for that. You are absolutely right - getting Ethiopia up to the standard of other African countries that benefited from colonisation is not easy. But never mention colonisation to Ethiopians. That's a dirty word. The rooms may be a little...More

We stayed for 3 nights as a family using 2 rooms and the staff were helpful after a little confusion about what had been booked. Rooms were large and full of character, but dark at night (so often the case in Ethiopia). Good showers and...More

Sure one doesnt expect a luxury place but a bit of love to detail and maintenance. Leg breaking paths and littered with ..... Lightening an open fire seems to overburden the staff and was done by some guests. Consolation: its nive once one gets out...More

Firstly, all aspects of our stay aside, this lodge seems to have an incredible commitment to worthwhile local development projects. They provide some information and an opportunity to donate (and will even match donations for some projects!) for a number of innovative and practical projects...More

Pleasant good sized rooms but dark and very cold - make sure you ask for hot water bottles on the way back to the room at night. Pathways to and from the rooms are very slippery and you do need a torch. There were blacks...More

Quite easy these days. Twenty years ago they were almost extinct but they have come back in good numbers now that they are not hunted and there are so few predators. Maybe there will even be too many in 20 year's time! You... More
