We went to Rio Colorado Lodge to celebrate my husband's 70th birthday. He had dreamed since childhood of catching a tarpon in Costa Rica...happily his dream was fulfilled! Our fishing guide Wendell was outstanding and so knowledgeable about the flora and fauna as well as fishing. Every day was not only a fishing expedition but a guided tour as well. We absolutely loved our experience at the lodge. We were very well treated by the owner and the staff who bent over backwards to take good care of us and meet our needs. The food was prepared by local cooks and was absolutely delicious! Service was very individualized and outstanding. We experienced flight issues causing a missed connection and a delayed arrival but even though it was long after business hours when our flight delay occurred, the owner and staff were quick to respond to our dilemma and arrange alternate transportation to the lodge. While in Costa Rica we traveled to the other popular areas and stayed in some rather exclusive hotels. However, even though the lodge facility is rather rustic, it was actually our favorite place we stayed in Costa Rica. The experience at the lodge was unique and unforgettable. And from the deck on the Rio Colorado River we viewed some of the best sunsets in Costa Rica. It was the perfect beginning to a trip of a lifetime. And Yes! We would love to go back and maybe try Snook fishing the next time!

Rio Colorado Lodge isn't the Ritz but if you're a passionate fisherman and want a lodge that puts you in pole position to the incredible fishery that is Rio Colorado and catching monster Tarpon is your main concern, then this may be the place for you. Sure it's dated, even dilapidated, but if it's the quality of the fishing experience that you're after, this is the spot. Dan is a superb host and a downright fascinating human being and will keep you entertained for hours. Rosa will challenge your mama's cooking and keep you well nourished while Marva will see to it that you have a cold beverage and sustenance in front of you at all times. My guide was Wendel and his local knowledge and fish lore was incredible. He never failed to put me on the fish (even when I couldn't follow up with the catching on my part). Rio Colorado is an amazing biosphere and truly a memorable experience.

Tarpon fished for 4 days . The fishing was great. We had multiple hookups and most days boated a few fish. The average size Tarpon was around #120 . The tackle could use upgrading and some of our fish were lost due to tackle failure. If we return I would consider bringing my own tackle . Our captain for the 4 days was "Plastico" and he was excellent The staff was very accommodating .The lodge manager is Diana and she if very helpful. The owner Mr Wise is a never ending source of stories about the history of this area and the lodge . The rooms need upgrading . Adequate hot water and the beds were comfortable after a long day of fishing. No Wifi in the rooms and there was no television. Laundry service is available daily and is a real plus. All food was included and was very good . The drinks were not included at the lodge or on the boat. In the end we went to fish and as the fishing is very good.

My May 17,2017 Tarpon fishing trip was perhaps one of the best in the 18 years, twice annually, that I have come to Rio Colorado. I had 29 Tarpon hooked and multiple misses. They ranged from 130-195 pounds. In 18 years I have never seen one under 100 pounds. My guide was always prompt and worked very hard as always. I can't adequately describe the delicious food, including the fantastic desserts. Once again I gained five plus pounds. I have become good friends with the staff and feel like part of their family. The rooms are cleaned every morning and any laundry you need done is completed and placed in your room before lunch. Once you catch these Tarpon you won't want to catch any other species of fish. I can't wait for my next trip in September. Sincerely, Ron Oswald. Minnesota.

Thanks for your kind words Ron. It was great to see you again. We look forward to your return in September. Edwin your guide said you guys had a triple hookup this trip, that must have been a wild moment. We are still picking up coconuts from the Hurricane but making good progress sweeping up....

I love this place. I think it is one of the few classic fish camps still in operation today. Many of the newer fish camps are nice but they are so modern they are like staying at a Holiday Inn. I really appreciate the classic charm of this place. It reminds me of the fish camps my grandfather took me when I was a young boy. This is my 3rd trip here and the fishing was great again. I fought Tarpon from 60lbs to 100lbs and 2 more in between. My buddy caught one close to 200lbs on another boat. I saw him boat the fish from a distance. That fish had a mouth the size of a 5 gallon bucket. Dan Wise is one of the most colorful characters in the business. His stories at the diner table are so interesting and entertaining. If your looking for a classic adventures fishing trip in the jungle you will love this place also. I took a couple of pictures of the pictures on the wall in the dining room. The one with the Tarpon at the boat is me.
