The Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Rainforest Beach and Golf Resort garners accolades for its impressive amenities, including diverse dining options, multiple pools, and beach activities, though some guests suggest there's room for enhancement. While the location is lauded for its beach and rainforest proximity, concerns are raised about room dampness and the high cost of accommodations and extras.
Although the resort's atmosphere is deemed lively with modern touches and commendable service, a few find the music overpowering and the decor dated. Cleanliness receives mixed reviews, with the grounds praised but some rooms criticized.

This was the hotel of choice for us to ring in the new, 2024 year and have joint vacation for 10 family members. We carefully selected it, and it proved to be good!
Location: About 50 min - 1 hour away from the San Juan airport. Absolutely beautiful section of Puerto Rico, minutes away from the El Yunque National Forest (biggest span of rainforest on the island) and the famous Luquillo beach. Resort has spacious grounds; to get to the hotel, you wind through a big golf course (road has lots and lots of speed humps!)
Rooms/ placement: Stayed across 4 rooms, mostly on the 4th floor. 2 rooms had views of both the ocean and a large part of the hotel's busiest parts of the grounds - the largest pool. From the room balcony, it was easy to spot family members both in the water (pool) and in lounge chairs.
Beware of high humidity. One of our rooms had a damp floor upon check-in, which made it very slick. Air conditioning the room for 20-30 minutes helped to dry it out. Another room had recurring "sweat stains" on the ceiling. A/C must work around the clock in the rooms to keep humidity under control.
Beach: Beach is amazing! Walkable both directions for at least 0.5 miles. Shortly to the east is a little river delta/ inlet, and a nearby equestrian school brings riders with horses to that inlet. Also, found a lot of different pretty shells, including sand dollard. Water was very warm (in January!). There was always a wave, but about half the time in January it was calm enough that the waves wouldn't break at a depth of 4-6 ft (although swimming conditions were always shown with red flag). Swimming is practically impossible; riding the waves is definitely doable. There are explicit warnings at the entrance to the beach about rip currents. One day (out of 7) the water was choppy and brought a bit of seaweed.
Pools: There are 3 pools total - barside, quiet pool, and main activity pool (with a jacuzzi). The main pool also has a fun waterslide for kids. Iguanas sometimes roam around, and sometimes even get on lounge chairs. We also loved that you didn't have to race early in the morning to stake chairs. It was easy to find free chairs both by the pool and on the beach at any hour.
Meals/ food: Since this is the U.S., no meals (not even breakfast) were included in the hotel stay. There are a number of restaurants at Wyndham, including one solely for takeout, but they are very pricey. Breakfast buffet is $35/day or $29/day if you sign up for the duration of your stay. Fridges in rooms are small; no microwaves or any other implements for cooking/ serving food. It's hard to arrange for getting your own food and eating it in the room. Poolside bars and cantinas are also paid and take a long time between ordering and the food being ready.
Entertainment: We came around New Year, so there were shows on several nights, but with expensive tickets, especially on New Year's Eve. There is a casino on site. Animals living at the resort provide entertainment too. E.g., there are two macaws in big cages by the front entrance, so guests can interact with them when waiting for their ride/ car.

Overall a very pleasing vacation. We had an Ocean View room (5th floor) overlooking the pool, which was a great choice. No issues at all with the room, the service, beds, pillows, etc. The grounds are very well kept, and pools were always spotless. The service at the restaurants and around the pools was excellent. Every single employee was friendly and courteous. The beach is clean, and there are plenty of chairs & umbrellas for everyone, and they "install" the umbrellas for you, which was great! None of the pools or other amenities ever seemed crowded even though the place was almost at capacity. Always room at the pools, with chairs and umbrellas available. Things we didn't like: 1. The in-room coffee makers. No directions! And the cups they give you don't sit in the spot where the coffee "leaks" out at a slow pace while brewing. 2. The pool decks are dangerously slippery. A member of our party almost took a bad spill, and we saw another guest go down hard. 3. The only breakfast choice other than room service is a $34 pp buffet. I heard it was good but at $80 for two with tip, can't do it. I've no idea what families did. 4. It's a bit secluded, and there's only one other establishment within walking distance, along the beach to the east. You cannot safely walk to the nearest town, the road in & out is narrow with no sidewalks or even shoulders. So if you want to stock your room with snacks, etc., do it on the way there. Of course there are transportation services available but it's gonna cost you, and you're gonna need round trip. 5. I've traveled enough to not be surprised by the cost of everyday items at a place like this but it wears on you! $5 for a soda, $17 for a drink by the pool, etc. We had a hefty bill at checkout and we didn't go crazy during our stay.

This was a lovely place with a beautiful beach. Here are the good points along with the not so good. My husband and I have stayed at a lot of places and typically we do unique resorts that are very different. This was your typical resort but they did do it well. The food selection was nice but pricey! The breakfast buffet did not disappoint. It had a wide selection with the option of a freshly made omelet or eggs, these were delish! If you didn't want the breakfast buffet they had a small cafe with smaller, less expensive options. There were about 3 restaurants onsite with varying price points. We ate at Palio and it was top notch from service to food to price!!
The pool areas were nice with adult and kids areas and 2 bars that did serve food too. The pool drinks were very expensive. The beach had chairs with umbrellas set out for you to use for free. There were cabanas to rent. There was a car rental at the resort along with a couple stores and a casino. We bought some less expensive wine at the store to have in our room and we rented a car to tour the local area more and do some exploring in the rainforest that is very close. Our room was nothing spectacular but it did have a small balcony that was nice. There was a wet, moistness to the rooms that never rent away and it had a small odor from that. We lived with it since we had heard of it before we went. This resort is in a great location for the beach and local sites. Did it have enough to make us want to return? probably not.

We traveled there for a wedding and the stay was terrible. We ended up cancelling the first few nights of our stay and getting a different place in Old San Juan only to switch to the resort right before the wedding. In hindsight we should've stayed in Old San Juan the whole time.
Charged for bellhop when none of them even offered to assist in carrying our luggage up to check-in counter or room. (3 uniformed people were outside when we got out of our uber and we had 2 luggage, 2 backpacks, and 3 grocery bags of items) My friend (the groom) went out and got dinner one night from a local place and the bellhop offered to help him carry it all up to the room. As he was walking he said the bellhop stopped to chat with someone and told him to go ahead and he would bring it up in a bit, but it was hot food for his kids and family so he didn't want to leave it downstairs.
First day burger and shrimp caesar salad were great. Ordered the salad twice more on the trip and it was nothing like the first day. One time it wasn't even a ceasar salad and had many different ingredients and shrimp were not seasoned the same. We were told that it wasn't a mistake and there was just a different chef that day. Sushi was good but lobster in the risotto was so bad (tough/chewy) that we didn't even finish the lobster. There were multiple times we would approach a bar, sit down, and wait 30+ minutes with no contact from the bartenders even when attempting to make eye contact with them to order. The bar was not busy at these times. It was frustrating enough that we just got up and left twice.
Drinks were hit and miss (ordered an old fashion and received a cup filled to the brim so it had obviously had water/seltzer added which sometimes is done. The next time I ordered one from a different bartender I asked that they don't add any water/seltzer to it and they said they never do.) The pina coladas were always good and some of the bartenders were friendly and attentive.
The casino was smaller than expected and didn't have great service. I played for about 10-12 hours throughout my stay and was offered a drink twice. The craps table was open two evenings but smaller than comfortable and with only two dealers the game was very slow.
I don't understand why we were paying full resort fees when half the resort was closed. According to the bride and groom the construction was supposed to be complete prior to the wedding which is in-line with when we booked our rooms there was no warning that the hotel was undergoing refurbishment to half the place. So half the place was closed and we paid full price without anything complementary. Not only will I not recommend the hotel/vacation club to anyone I would encourage against it.

From the moment we went to do check in we were let down. The receptionist informed us that the only room with an ocean view available was one on the second floor, which barely had a view to the ocean. The second floor hallway and the room we were assigned smelt intensely of mold. When we went to check the bathroom, the toilet and shower were still dirty and had pubic hairs. The bedsheets were stained as well. When we notified front desk we were told that no other rooms were available and that cleaning service would pass by the room soon. However, after an hour and a half of waiting for the cleaning service to arrive we gave up waiting as it was already late and we wanted to get some rest. We ended up having to clean the bathroom ourselves as well as change our own bedsheets. The curtains and air vent in the room had mold as well. For how expensive they charge a night, you would think that the rooms would be kept in a better state and that they would be thoroughly cleaned. All in all, what was supposed to be a nice getaway for my husband’s and I’s anniversary, was a letdown to say the least.

This is a nice resort property. Our room left a lot to be desired. We booked an ocean view and we could view the ocean if we stepped out on the balcony and turned our necks right. In my experience this room should have been classified as a partial ocean view as opposed to full ocean view. Upon entering the room, we walked right in to 2-3 inch size hair balls on the floor. There was hair found throughout the room from different people based on the color and texture. The bathroom could have been better cleaned. I took my first shower and saw a message in the mirror from who I assumed were the people to stayed there prior to us staying in the room which further added to my question of how clean is this room. I understand this room is on the beach and I understand that sand is hard to clean up. Having said that, I have stayed at many ocean front properties and never experienced the amount of sand I had in the room that I did not track in. The floors in the room NEVER dried. It felt gross walking around on floors that never would dry. I understand the climate is humid in PR but again, I've been to many an ocean front properties with climates such as the one in PR and the floor never just stayed wet the whole time I was there. The bedsheets had small stains on them which could have just been thrown away. I did call the front desk to ask for a deep clean of the room and they did mop the floor but it still held so much wetness on the floor and the room in general had a mildew odor. There were other concerns around the cleanliness of the room but at some point we became paranoid and just "toughed it out" until the end of our stay. I understand the resort does not have much control over the Ceratopogonidaes on the beach but since you advertise it as part of your property I think it is important to at least spray the beach to control as much as possible to cut down on bites. We received terrible bites and now question if they were even in the room before we came because our bites started before we went to the pool or ocean area. Thank you for the bottle of bubbly and fruit but the experience at this property was sullied by the lack of cleanliness.

This was our second year going and unfortunately there was a big contrast in years staying. We don't mind spending the money, but the price was far too much for the amenities.
The Good: The property, pool, and beach is beautiful and in a great location. The property sprawls across hundreds of acres (or appears to) and is well maintained outside. The food is also really good, and we were always happy with our meals. The burger at Margaritaville was surprisingly tremendous.
The Bad: Rooms were smelled of mold and mildew making it very hard to sleep. Also, the pillows on the beds were tiny and uncomfortable. Internet was unusable... not even for emailing. People saving their seats at the pool or beach at 8AM and leaving for 4 hours is obnoxious and should be banned and enforced strictly. Finally, if the restaurant is half food, let people walk in and eat there instead of telling us we didn't make a reservation.

I was very disappointed in my experience. When I initially made my reservation, I spoke with an agent to go over all my questions and concerns, as I had never been to Puerto Rico before. I let the agent know that I was interested in snorkeling and activities in the ocean. Some reviews mentioned seaweed being in the water. I asked the agent about this and he ensured me during this time of year they did not have any seaweed in the water. When I arrived at check in the front desk agent tried to tell me my room was for two double beds. I let her know I had reserved an oceanfront king room, not two double beds. After back and forth, I showed her my booking and she ended up having to provide a suite with a king bed due to the hotel overbooking the room we had initially reserved. When we arrived and went to the beach the next morning we were shocked to find the water filled with seaweed. In addition, we had booked a snorkeling excursion for the following day and later heard from the agent it was being changed to a sailing boat to the smaller island, then eventually canceled the night before. All water activities had been canceled due to the water being unsuitable. I then spoke to a beach agent, and he told me that this side of the island is typically not suitable for swimming this time of year. This is not what I was told when booking and I made it a point that I had wanted to be swimming in the ocean and that’s what I was interested in. I was told by one of the employees I should have stayed on the other side island of the Caribbean side of the island based on the activities I was interested in. I was told I would have to rent a car and drive two plus hours to go snorkeling. There was no options or alternatives given. . There was n or accommodations made at all. Not to mention the hotel was over an hour from old San Juan the only other activity to do. In addition, at the time of booking, I had no idea that the hotel was a part of Margaritaville. Every single person I encountered staying there was there with a company. It seemed this hotel was exclusively for businesses hosting seminars. After this, I decided there was no point in staying due to everything I was wanting to do being canceled and ended up flying home early. upon checking out, I had to let the agent know that I had still not received my $50 credit for food and beverages that was offered during the time of booking. Everything just seemed very shady and it was unfortunately really bad experience. Worst of all they told me to contact the property management and after telling their representative my concerns, they promised that a management representative would get back to me immediately to deal with the issues, and I never heard back. Very poorly ran company would not recommend.

Beautiful location and resort! Very good service, friendly staff. Special shout out to Carolina from recreation! Carolina was very helpful providing kids activity information and giving great advice for local activities. Rooms could be cleaned better - lots of dust and shower tiles dirty. Shower could be bigger and definitely needs more light. Service on the beach is terrific and food service on the beach is a big plus!! Food is very good on the resort with many dining options- our fav the breakfast buffet and ice cream at Roots, as well as Puerto Rican restaurant Iguana! Our kids loved the pools esp the slide! The complimentary exercise classes in mornings right by the beach are very good as are the trainers!! The basketball court is right on the main property by the beach. They also offer many complimentary activities like iguana and turtle feeding on the property. They also offer other games such as chess, ping pong. The gym/fitness center really needs to be bigger, updated, and could use some natural light! This resort is a short drive to El Yunque which is another big plus. All in all our family made great memories here! Thank you!

Wyndham Rio Mar is a nice property based solely upon the service and restaurants on the property. The facility itself is like a tired old car that still runs so you hate to get rid of it. I understand that the island has had to deal with significant hurricane setbacks but the price for the stay is at a new Cadillac level, when in reality you’re getting a 20 year old model. (See pics). The room was adequate as far as layout, but extremely musty. All four couples (four rooms) noted the same. It prompted us to all go to Walmart and buy room deodorizers and the auto vent scent dispersers that we hooked into the air conditioning grills. The mirrors were delaminating (water damage?) and the furniture was bulky, outdated and ‘sticky’. Our safe did not work. The entrance hall light was out and it took 5 requests to get it fixed (it happened on the 5th after noting a ‘safety hazard to enter a dark room’).
The bright side is the restaurants. The Iguana Cocina, stands out as a 5 star. Mofongo is a must! The wait staff was polite, informative and attentive (Ettenaesh, an absolute gem). Helped us navigate the local cuisine with a smile. Skirt stake was spectacular and the drinks delicious and unique. So good we went another time. Roots Coastal Kitchen was almost as good and Karla (sp?) made the night. A close second to Iquana only because of volume in the restaurant. Poolside bars with great waiters (save one, a woman with big glasses who could hardly give us the time of day, sighed a lot, rolled her eyes and generally just avoided our table at 5 O’Clock Somewhere then added 20% to our bill automatically), don’t miss the tacos and nachos which sound simple but are somehow better at the pool.
The grounds are well manicured and maintained.
It rained 3 days and the Ocean Course was closed during our stay. The River Golf course was wet by design of Mother Nature, but had 3 or 4 very rough greens. For less money play the El Conquistador course. Very hilly and manicured.
