Initially in 2016 with a bunch of WA surfers we made the trek to a small island of the coast to Nias. At the time I was thinking it would be awesome to get a few waves most days and kick back during lay days. Little did I know it was going to be full on stoke until the last paddle. From the pick up to skimming across glassy water in the speedboats to arriving at the camp, getting to ASU was smooth as. We then strolled across the island only to emerge from the palm trees and be faced with a glassy left hander peeling down the point. We went onto surf Asu and surrounding waves every day, to leave 12 days later surfed out. Well it’s been a few months since I pulled the trigger and smashed out a return tour. Leading up I thought it can’t turn it on like 2016. I was so wrong, rocking up to 8ft glassy walls...it was on! And it stayed on until the day I left.....I had had my fill. The way you should feel at the end of a trip. The new ASU camp is a credit to Earl having everything you could want for a surf trip, a comfy bed, a warm shower and somewhere to stash your gear. The “presidential” suit which I had during my stay has an uninterrupted view of the point making a surf check super easy. Roll out of bed, walk 2 metres, look up.....surfs pumping! When conditions changed, Earl had it covered and we were on the nearest quality break. Something a little special is the quality of the food. It is fresh, tasty and hits the spot after a big day surfing, especially the lobster 🦞. All in All a cracking trip, time to work out how to get back to ASU.…
Earl and the Asu family are amazing hosts and the set-up is next level. The waves pumped for the whole 10 days, the food was amazing and the vibes at camp were epic. I'm still dreaming of being there... waking up in comfort in front of such an amazing wave every morning only to spend the day surfing, snorkeling, eating amazing food and enjoying the company of the legends that live and stay there. I'll definitely be back!
Waves were consistent and good everyday most of the day. Head high to double Overhead. Food was great and service was great. My room was good with AC and fan and private bathroom and a front porch to hang out with an Ocean view. Some Charter boats but that was because the South east winds were off shore here due to the El Nino, but still more than enough waves to go around and I got my best barrel here at Asu of my whole 3 week Indo trip.I would like to return during March, April, October or November as the place is a swell magnet!
My 3rd visit to Asu Camp was a great surprise as per the new camp site was amazing, just beside the previous camp, with new and upgraded installations. The new bangalows are great, with amazing beach gems decoration,a/c and fan and clean and comfortable bathroom. As always we had great food and cold beer and the company of the managers Earl and Samantha, who create an amazing atmosphere to such an amazing place. If you want to get good waves with no crowd, good vibe, quality food and cold beer, this is the place to visit.
