Had a great 9 day stay in this peaceful oasis. The cabins are basic but have everything you need to switch off and just relax. The point was consistent, but you do need to know what you are doing as it is a fast sectioning wave and the reef is close and very sharp. We had it to ourselves most days, with only a single boat coming for two days when it was too big at Asu. Markmore tended to all our needs and the meals provided were delicious, although did get a bit samey after 9 days. Darius kept us supplied with Bintangs and soft drinks on demand. Would love to come back for another big swell.

We got robbed inside our cabin while sleeping. 6, 3 Million RP. They didn’t tell us to lock from inside and this already happened. Not only they didn’t take any responsability about the success but threatening us to pay the total quantity of the accomodation, by bringing District Inspector. (But they didn’t inform Police because they said they are corrupted). An aussie guy (Oliver) appeared in scene taking the roll of “translator” between us and local crew; and I found after he is the real Manager of Afulu Retreat (not Makmur the local guy) I’m still wondering why. Creepy. Besides they charge 1 M a night and there’s No wifi; not even hot water; the bathroom is half a minute walk from the cabin. The food and the location is great, but still not worthy. My worst experience in 5 weeks Indo trip.

We spent 5 nights in Afulu retreat with our 7-year-old child. The bungalows were beautiful and from the private terrace you could admire the magnificent sunset. The shared bathrooms were about 20m from the bungalows and were clean. The outdoor shower behind your bungalow was fun and out of the ordinary. Food was served on the terrace three times a day. it was really delicious. Fish and chicken alternately with separate supplements. The owners were really friendly and the man spoke good English.

On arrival, we were greeted by an Indonesian guy. He was nice enough, he showed us to our bungalow. It was clean, but extremely basic. I understand we're in remote Sumatra but we were expecting more for the price. The shared bathroom was a higher standard but was about 50 yards from the bungalow. Food was the biggest disappointment. Seriously bad. Each day for every meal - was semi warm fish or chicken & every meal with rice, carrots and beans. That was it. The bizarre thing was there was no restaurant or social area. We were given our meals in a tupperware box that we had to eat on our laps on the veranda of our bungalow. Again, thats fine - but for $80 / night or whatever we paid, it wasnt good. My poor wife. Like most, the reason we visited was for the surf. Afulu IS a great wave no question. But its pretty inconsistent and very shallow when its below head high. Its for ADVANCED surfers only. When I asked about other waves, the Indo manager had no idea. So I reached out the Kiwi owner (who lives about 200m away) - who basically said go and look yourself. Zero help. We were definitely disappointed with the whole experience.

I first went to Afulu on my own last year and then returned with family for 2 weeks last December/January. Such an awesome place. Great accommodation, excellent local food and the team make the trip from the airport very easy. Remote, beautiful, quite and friendly. Amenities are clean and the bungalows very comfortable. This is a great place for couples and for families. We will be back.
