Nestled in a high elevation, Alila Jabal Akhdar offers guests a secluded retreat revered for its harmony with nature and breathtaking mountain views. Many guests laud the hotel's luxurious amenities, such as the indulgent spa and the striking infinity pool, while the well-maintained and spacious rooms with their cozy atmospheres earn rave reviews. While some travelers question the value, especially concerning food and activities, the exceptional service provided by attentive staff balances these concerns for most. Despite its many accolades, a few guests feel it lacks a certain soulful essence.

Thinking about our three day Visit to AJA I’m trying to think of new things to write to compliment the previous reviews and to avoid duplication. We stayed in a ridge view suite (that would be my preferred recommendation over the other suite views) for simple and understated beauty (sunsets in particular) (room 50 extremely quiet for those who like their peace). Things to remember 2000 metres up means cold and fresh (so thermals & Gilets are a must), the weather is changeable (for us wonderful sunshine to cloud to sleet in a few hours). The Suites are wonderful, not mentioned so far are the hugest beds (7ft by 12ft?) - certainly the largest and most comfortable we have slept in! Hot water bottles placed in bed by the turn down service are a nice touch. As with with most Oman resorts the prices are expensive (but comparable with one another) so around £100 for a 60 minute massage and alcohol is not cheap so if you like a sundowner or a glass of wine before dinner suggest hitting duty free. The resort appears quiet (even when full) so if it’s peace you are after it is certainly to be recommended. The views are staggering (compassions with Grand Canyon are lazy but probably apt) and breathtaking. We used the spa twice and while good nothing leapt out for us to make it memorable. There is a small discrete gym. The breakfasts are wonderfully large (most products sourced locally) and the Arabic breakfast in particular to be recommended if you enjoy local cuisine. Service is on par with most 5 star resorts. The geography of 2000 metres means some people may be affected by the attitude so worth checking before. Those staying appeared to be mostly extremely fit older hikers and ramblers). The resort appears purposely built for nature lovers and those seeking quiet and peace - for those looking for noise or entertainment in the evening perhaps look elsewhere (they do have a outdoor cinema showing twice a week but the weather made it unwatchable for us). AJA appears totally supportive of the environment with many products recycled (bottles, straws, etc). Recommended for those seeking peace, geographical beauty and long hikes.

Everything about the hotel was amazing.

Pros
Beautiful large rooms
Pool
No plastic
Ginger tea by the indoor heated pool
Lovely spa
Relaxing vibe
Attention to detail
Butterfly trail
Fitness trail
Amazing food at breakfast and dinner (didn't try any lunches)
Helpful staff informing us of hiking routes
Close to most trails
I had a very relaxing pregnancy massage.
Refillable water bottles that you can borrow for when you go on long hikes.
The comfy chair on the balcony of our room

Cons
It is expensive so we can't come back every weekend.

Tips for Jebel Akhdar in general

It is cold at night so bring warm clothes.
You need suncream! Higher factor than normal
4x4 is required
Don't underestimate some of the hiking trails. Check the maps carefully so you don't go off trail and join an incorrect one like we did! We did the lost village trail but ended up on the Via Feratta route...

Alila was one of the best places I have ever been to. Fancy in a unique eco friendly kind of way and it is the proof you do not have to sacrifice easy fancy lifestyle in return for sustainability.
The road is a bit lengthy from Muscat but we enjoyed the ride specially once you enter the mountain as the view can be very nice. The place has a unique aromatic smell once you enter and it gives you a vibe of calm and peace. Parking is available of course but you might want to drop your bags at the door first since it’s a rough pathway that could break your luggage wheels if you dragged them up.
The check in was easy and fast and we were taken through a quick tour which we found very helpful. The local and authentic decore gives the place a wonderful touch, weather was very nice despite the hot summer of Muscat so I can only imagine it can be very cold in the winter.
The breakfast was nice and high quality with many healthy options but the dinner had a very limited selection.
The hotel offer a variety of activities but the best one we experienced was the star gazing. With a sky that has no moon we were afraid the night view will be less than perfect but turned out to be a very good thing since it gave us the chance to enjoy the view of the galaxy arm and use the modern sophisticated telescope to see plants and stars and the very knowledge guide made the experience exceptional.
Mosquitos can be a bit tricky there , they are everywhere but the hotel has all natural mosquito repellent everywhere you can ask for it in all the common areas or use the ones in the rooms but you might want to consider bringing your own if you have a favourite brand or so.
The stone pool was as well a unique experience, the under water silence was something new to me , no noise of pumps or filtering system, no ecos just complete silence, best pool I have ever seen. There were many families with little kids there but I really don’t see myself bringing my kid there as the activities are mostly focused on adults and the water streams “Falaj” that run through the entire place could make it tricky to keep a child away from them.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, tried their best to make out stay remarkable and it sure was.
The rooms are big and well equipped with a big bathroom, mini fridge and an Nespresso machine. They had a lovely welcome tray set up for us and we could tell that the slippers and robes were personalised to welcome us as they had one for a lady and the other for a gentleman, I found this really sweet.

The Alila is perfectly situated in the heart of Oman's  Hajar Mountains. This is a great property to get away  from the sweltering heat of the Gulf Plains. The setting is tranquil and quite green, which is unusual in the Gulf region. The property is designed with Omani tradition
and modern  amenities in mind. The entire resort is
designed on a sustainable approach that emphasises
maximum recycling and minimal use of plastic and garbage creation. Everything is reusable and plastic free, from water bottles to toothbrushes. The rooms are  large and have rustic touches. The bathrooms are the  greatest feature, as they are pretty spacious and well built.The entire resort is picture-perfect for instagram.
The concrete pool area blends in seamlessly with its
surroundings. The plunge in the temperature-controlled  jacuzzi with views of the mountains is quite calming. The  place is ideal for soul rejuvination because they have a
schedule for meditation, relaxation, and cliff yoga, some
of which are complimentary.Sunsets and sunrises may be seen from the resort, especially from the canyon view  rooms. The spas on offer are pretty relaxing.This is the  greatest place for  astrophiles because it has an
observatory and a telescope. They also have a nightly
stargazing schedule. During the beginning and end of  the lunar cycle, you have the best view of constellations and the Milky Way galaxy. The program's director is a  brilliant young lady who also give tips for astrography.
They have a nice bar that serves fantastic cocktails. The hospitality is warm. The staff is courteous and helpful.
Mr .Faiz took excellent care of us. The only thing that  bothered me was the Juniper restaurant. The menu is  rather limited, and service is slow. The servers are  befuddled and puzzled.The restaurant's Omani manager on the other hand, is working hard to avoid this situation.It may go unnoticed, but for someone like me, it's  off-putting for the money you're paying for your stay.I wish they upgrade their menu.
The overall experience at the resort is fantastic  and enthralling. I highly recommend this place for staycation .................

We stayed here for a few days in late January. The hotel setting is stunning and unique, the view is something else (particularly at sunset). The hotel has been done up very tastefully. The main hotel building has traditional corridor with rooms but its tasteful. The rooms dotted around the property are worth the extra cost as they are beautiful and you feel a little bit more detached from the main building. For their price, these were very well thought out and lovely rooms.

The property has a ‘retreat’ type feel to it however be aware that the altitude does mean the temperatures can be much colder than on the coast. We were unlucky with the weather but it was basically 0 degrees at night. If prepared then it’s perfect and the trekking opportunities are great.

Food is delicious and good variety of local and international food. The puddings/deserts are on another level to what you’d expect which makes for a great treat at the end of a good meal.

Booze across Oman is expensive and this hotel is no exception. Wine is very expensive however we saw worse mark ups in other hotels.

Staff are charming and very helpful and we liked the little extras like free filtered water, free daily laundry (a few pieces) and hot water bottles at night.

We would happily return here and would recommend to all. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Thank you Alila for another amazing holiday. Alila Jabal Akhdar is the perfect example of understated luxury. The decor, the food, the rooms, spa.... Our room was AMAZING -the view of the canyon, sitting on the balcony at night looking at the stars with our hot water bottles, blankets and chocolates! The food is fantastic, especially the tasting menu. Also loved the fish and soup in the Rose Lounge. Love also all your eco efforts -refillable toiletries, refillable water bottles in the cars, solar panels, reusable straws.... Wish other hotels followed your example in this respect. The only thing we would say is that it is unnecessary to change the towels and bed linen so much. We did a couple of lovely walks (Butterfly trail and abandoned village)which were well marked and we liked the fact that you have left the terrain fairly undisturbed rather than making paths etc. Thank you again and we will be back!

I traveled with a 10 month baby and requested a crib , I found the room equipped with not only the crib
but a full set of toiletries and small towels as well as a swimming diaper ! In addition to a bottle warmer and sterilizer !
I loved the stargazing session with Al Kamli , he was passionate and interesting, I learned alot.

The guys at the reception were great ! Vey well spoken and welcoming.

.
My comments are only on the food, we stayed for a couple of nights and the menu was limited
The breakfast lacked verity in terms of the set menu, the lunch and dinner menu were limited but the portion was good for the price. It lacks variety and it would be nice if there was a snack menu, it would be great.

Also I hope the activities have more slots or managed differently, we chose Alila mainly for the activities and we were disappointed that many sessions were already booked and sometimes by
one family only ( who sometimes don't show up )

The pool had a ladies session which was great given the conservative nature of the country which was great, but it was still exposed and male employees were going in and out of the area and some .windows were not covered , so I wish that was addressed to ensure complete privacy

this is one of the best places to stay in Oman!! ,All in all it was an amazing stay and we are already planning our next visit

An ordinary review will not do justice to this extraordinary place. It is set in the breathtakingly, beautiful Al Hajar mountains. Alila offers diverse activities and culinary delights for every palate.

Accommodations are tastefully done in a traditional Omani style and housekeeping was the sharpest I've ever seen.
There were so many different and thrilling activities! Very well organized and enjoyable.
The food was heavenly! They have a very talented and hard working team. Gregory and Vitaly ( Chef de Cuisine and F&B Assistant Manager) you are in our hearts forever !

Management was very present and very professional. The general manager, assistant food and beverage manager, guest relations director, spa manager, and executive chef were particularly helpful and caring. They were constantly checking in and did everything they could to ensure we had a wonderful stay.

Thank you for the long lasting memories !

Suggested by our travel company to add three nights to a week's stay in Muscat, as part of a 34 year wedding anniversary celebration, we wish we had made this a week's stay at this hotel. We were transferred by private car as part of the holiday, Zahara Tours . We can recommend their services.
Met by courteous, helpful staff at Reception and were taken to our room, one of the detached buildings on the site ( some rooms are over the main hotel building) We can recommend staying in these separate ' villas' away from the main hotel if you wish for privacy and peace with a fantastic view..these are called the Ridge suites.
We didn't realise that the usual hotel information is displayed via a QR code ( none in the room itself ). The room was decorated beautifully and was very clean. There were mosquitos in the evenings which the hotel fumigates outside every day, not a problem but good to be aware. Breakfast , no buffet but good table service , small cuts of cheese , meats , salad and fruit with a choice of savoury and sweet main course. Quality and quantity excellent. Service in the evenings was a bit patchy as manager not present , however on his return he seemed aware of training needs. Evening menu was a la Carte and although appeared a lot of choice was actually rather narrow. Still very tasty and good portions. We did not take wine as very expensive but it was made clear you could provide your own in your room.
The pool was lovely although the pool area would be cramped if hotel was full. There is no hand rail to assist getting out of the pool. Ralph, the lifeguard and attendant very helpful and attentive, providing towels and free glasses of water. ( As seems to be the case in Oman, water appears to be generally free ).
Events: Stargazing in the evenings, delivered by an expert, Mohammed. This was free and very worthwhile. Geology, also free , was about an hour and also excellent. There were three types of walk/climbing expeditions , varying in cost. The 2 hour one was approximately £75-£80, this involved a steep walk /climb using safety ropes, not for those who have a fear of heights and you need to have physical ability, but very worthwhile. There is a 6 hour trek to the bottom of the gorge which we did not have time to do.
This is a wonderful place and we would love to go back.

The trip was for two days with 2 adults and two teenage children, one who has a dairy and nut allergy.
From the moment of arrival the staff were attentive in meeting any queries you had and ensuring you had a great stay. The head chefGreg made particular efforts to ensure our son with the allergy was catered for and the staff were also aware, which made for a relaxing stay.
This is clearly a hotel which aims to meet the needs of its guests. From its perfect getawy location you are guaranteed a relaxing stay in the cool mountain air. The Cave experience is fantastic along with both the butterfly walk and the more longer "Mirage in the mountain" trek.
We look forward to our return

Not sure as I normally travel with my own car up there but I suggest the following: a) get a quotation from them for taking you from airport and returning you back and b) if you are comfortable driving in Oman (fairly safe) get a quotation from avis or budget for a 4x4 (no real need but police will stop you before going up the mountain as they will allow only 4x4) A Toyota Rav4 would do nicely. Getting a taxi or other service would cost you a lot. Hope that helps.

Hello, Sorry but I will reply in English (nd hope it helps). We stayed at Alila 3 nights and that was perfect. But ofc it all depends on how you wish to spend your time there. Relaxing? Activities? They offer many activities like: #Sporty: hike, via ferrata, VTT # Relaxing: yoga sunrise and sunset, spa, swimming in the outdoor pool and 2 jacuzzi or in the heated indoor pool #Entertainment: outdoor cinema, private dinner, stars gazing, instrumental live music in the evening #Cultural: visit surroundings ( with option by car) , visit forts Loved this place so much. It is so peaceful and relaxing that I would not mind to spend even weeks there if I could (: Have a wonderful stay !

I would expect this hotel to take all necessary precautions as the management team was excellent. However I would recommend that you check with them in advance. If they can satisfy you on this point I would strongly recommend the Alila.
