The lobby is quaint and welcoming. Hot tea and coffee a regular staple for anyone who happens to drop in. So close to so many wonderful experiences! Definitely coming back in the summertime again. Really enjoyed our room with a view!
First time ever to stay at the historic Hotel De Haro at Roche Harbor resort. I’ll start with acknowledging that my wife and I don’t agree on my four star rating. She feels it’s closer to a three star. We stayed in the John Wayne suite at the old hotel and I found it to be large, well appointed, and loved the fact that the bathtub from John Wayne’s yacht was in our bathroom. My wife’s beef was with the loud music coming from the event center right behind the hotel that continued until 11 PM on a Sunday night. The hotel is at the heart of the large resort that includes a huge marina, shops and restaurants and a waterfront location that’s absolutely gorgeous. If you’re looking for new and shiny rent one of the houses or condos that are available. On the other hand if you’re looking to stay in a historic property that’s well-maintained with wonderful staff this is the place. One word of caution though is it’s pretty pricey. And there is no complementary meal included. But there’s at least three restaurants at the resort plus a lot of other places to grab a snack or a bite.
Stayed in a 1 bedroom condo with harbo view. Clean with everything needed. The grounds on Roche Harbor a beautiful. We visited early Spring so not everything up and running full time yet, but also not the big crowds so was perfect. Enjoyed sitting on the deck or hanging on the dock watching all the beautiful yachts.
Roche Harbor, on the northwest side of San Juan Island, is a quiet getaway in winter. I stayed in a one-bedroom condo that was nicely appointed. It had two complete bathrooms and two decks. The wood fireplaces have not been converted to gas so you find them clean and sporting candles to light in the fire box. The kitchen was quite complete with a nice table nook that looked out on the marina through the trees. I stayed two nights, the 24th and 25th. If I were to do this again, I would stay the 25th and 26th. Other than the front desk in the resort's Hotel de Haro, it is shut down on Christmas Day. The advertised daily housekeeping does not occur on Christmas Day (I would have appreciated being told or having the room discounted slightly for the lack of that service that you pay for). Neither of the two restaurants is open on Christmas Day. It all reopens on the 26th. The three condo buildings are older and do not appear to be wheelchair accesible due to stairs. I am not sure about accessibility in the Hotel de Haro itself. Others may have commented on that. I would definitely stay at the condos again in off-season. Roche Harbor is about a 20 minute drive from Friday Harbor's ferry dock. There is taxi service on San Juan Island.
I enjoy old, historic hotels and so chose to stay in the original building. My room, 2A, was where Pres. Theodore Roosevelt stayed and that was really special. Totally updated and beautifully renovated, it had a great view of the harbor and exterior door to the veranda. Friendly staff.
