Charleston, South Carolina107 contributions158 helpful votesWe returned to the delightful Inn at Little Washington for a dinner and overnught stay this April. Every staff person performs with perfection but without ostentation. We always stay in Julia Child's special suite to magnify the thrill of being at this special place. The Inn is gradually taking over much of the little town with absolute subtlety, and there is now a choice of rooms in several buildings other than the main Inn building, where Julia stayed. Dinner and the presentation of it are as good as it gets, and the comparatively high price is worth every penny.
Don't miss spending time in Chef Patrick's garden and surrounding grounds, and ask for a kitchen tour if convenient. After dark, stand outside the big kitchen window and watch the fascinating show inside. Even the inevitable gift shop is an enjoyable experience. It is hard to imagine how anyone could give this place less than a perfect score.

We love the visual picture you’ve painted for all of us…a bit of an ‘on the outside looking in’ perspective. You’ve given so many wonderful suggestions to other readers as to how to fully enjoy their experience at The Inn at Little Washington, and we are grateful for that. We are pleased that you enjoy the comforts of the Julia Child Suite every time you stay here and we look forward to your next visit. Thank you for your gracious review.

We had a wonderful second visit at Christmas arriving on Christmas eve for two days of pure joy and fabulous food and wine. Although because of our belated reservation our room was small, it was nevertheless more than adequate and the appointment was outstanding. We had two wonderful teas at 2:00 p.m. (accompanied by a special egg nog with bourbon) and two wonderful breakfasts and dinners. The food at dinner was sublime. Although Chef O'Connell's dishes have an obvious richness, they also somehow are quite light. As examples, his catalan custard with foie gras, tin of sin (Petrossian osetra caviar with a crab rillette underneath), pan roasted lobster and amazing mac and cheese were all superb. Since the Inn has the Wine Spectator grand award for its wine cellar, there are many great wines to choose from to accompany the food. In our case, the selection of red and white Burgundies is outstanding and we found just what we wanted. Since the ratio of servers and helpers to the patrons must be at least four to one, there is a constant stream of assistance in everything that takes place. In addition, if you take the time and walk across the street, you will find the Inn's farm complete with llamas, baby goats, sheep and chickens. Even in the cold weather, we enjoyed the animals. Finally, the gift shop across from the Inn is wonderful and, if you like Chef's apron and the Inn's special bouquets, you can purchase them at the gift shop. Since our first visit was five years ago, we made a promise that our third visit will not take another five years. David P.

Like many, we had heard the raves about the Inn, built in a corner of a lovely village at the site of an old gas station garage. The food was all that it was promised to be, with the single exception being a fairly dry and tasteless block of rockfish. The service was seamless, and we enjoyed a visit to the incredible kitchen. The decor is a bit over the top eclectic, but it suited us fine and we especially enjoyed the small back patio with koi pond, which nearly all tables have a view of.
We stayed overnight at the Inn, which was very pleasant and charmingly done up (each room honors a well-known chef or foodie) but not worth the price - which is one reason that a cottage industry has grown up around the Inn in this tiny hamlet. There are plenty of other small B&Bs to stay in.
Breakfast by the patio was exceptionally well done, with a flight of four fruit juices that enables much hilarity in comparing the flavors.
The shopping in this tiny company town is great, with the Inn's own gift shop being one of the best I've seen.

I recommend that anyone with the means and opportunity experience this gem at least once in their lifetime. Please be sure to purchase a package that includes meals, as the afternoon tea, cocktails, extravagant dinner, and breakfast are all part of the essential itinerary to fully understand what this place is all about. No stone is left unturned with regard to the level of detail and thoughtfulness related to the guest experience. All requests are entertained with an approach that indicates that the guest's experience takes precedence over all other factors, and that any obstacles will be overcome to ensure success. My wife mentioned at dinner that she wished she had bought the signature tea at the gift shop that afternoon, so they went across the street in the icy weather, opened the shop (which was closed for the night), scooped the tea, put it in a jar, and delivered it to our table. Enough said.

We recently spent 2 nights in the Alice Waters suite at IALW. From beginning to end we were well looked after - from the welcome cocktail, afternoon tea, treats in our room, and lovely breakfast, to the very personalized service throughout our stay. No detail was overlooked!
The suite is absolutely lovely with second floor bedroom, enormous bathroom, balcony, and widow's walk, however it is up several flights of stairs (with a second floor bedroom) so anyone requiring a room on the first floor should perhaps choose another.
The grounds and gardens around the Inn are beautiful and make for a very nice walk. The gift shop across the street is also well worth a browse, and sells many of the teas offered at the afternoon tea service, so if you find a favorite you can likely find it there. This was our first visit but surely won't be our last.
