After a memorable experience three years ago, we decided to come back for another anniversary celebration...we also decided to upgrade to a larger room with a small sitting area. With taxes, the room was over $800, and ridiculously overpriced. We've stayed in lovely hotels all over the country, and this one, although the staff and service are impeccable, simply doesn't match the cost being charged. The room is nicely appointed. period. Our room did have a small balcony and we walked out to view our surroundings--the parking lot in front of the hotel! I've stayed at 5 star hotels all over the country for half the price here --with views of ocean, rolling hills, mountains, major monuments-- a parking lot view for $800?
Finally, a good night's sleep is top on my list of what's important-- The whirling of a vacuum cleaner going full blast at 6 AM on Sunday morning just beneath our room was quite a wake up call.
We'll definitely be back for dinner but not the lodging.

My husband surprised me for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. Even though we had visited about 3 years ago it was like my first time. We were met at the door by a very happy/positive gentleman for valet parking and then we were handed a wonderful drink before being escorted to a parlor room in which we were served afternoon tea and a delicious assortment of breads and cookies. When our room was ready at 3pm as promised we were escorted to the best room (sanctuary) in the place. I am probably bias. A beautiful living room with the bedroom upstairs overlooking the beautifully appointed living space. I felt like I was a Hollywood star!@ There was a separate place to hang our clothes in a hallway that looked more like another separate living space. The bathroom had an oriental flair and it was to die for. Not to mention it included dual shower heads. So there was no fussing over who goes first in the shower. We also had to try out the antique/clawfoot tub. To be honest a person could camp out in the bathroom alone. My only regret is that I only got to enjoy this space for one night. I won't even go into detail about the walkout from the Master bedroom. On a warmer night I can imagine just sitting out there and enjoying the ambiance. But at least I got a chance to see the mountains and the light dusting of snow gave an added romantic effect. It reminded me of our first honeymoon when we visited Switzerland, Austria and Bad Tolz, Germany. As the other reviews reflect this little visit is not for anyone on a strict/tight budget. But more so geared towards those who are trying to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and for those who don't mind dropping some serious cash for some serious luxury treatment!

From the beginning of parking the car to be escorted to the front door to being seated for dinner, to the menu engraved with the parties names, to a meal that is hard to compare with anything else anywhere. The Inn is a very elegant place to experience.

We are very familiar with many Relais & Châteaux properties, but had never stayed (or dined) at The Inn at Little Washington, until now.
Over the last decade, we have traveled to Washington DC (not where the Inn is located, BTW) many times, but had not been able to add a couple of days, onto either end of those trips, or The Inn was booked completely. I gave up on trying to mix business with pleasure, and started a 3 mo. long celebration of our 45th Anniversary, with a stay there - not related to any other travel.
I had expected very high standards, as is common with all Relais & Châteaux properties, that we have experienced, but was amazed by The Inn - their restaurant and the service from their staff. Every aspect was nearly perfect, exceeding even my expectations.
Now, The Inn at Little Washington is about a 1 hr. drive from Dulles Airport (IAD), but once away from the development around the airport, and its business parks, one is on lovely, pastoral highways, heading into "the country." As one approaches Washington, VA, there is signage, but it is subtle - unlike another Relais & Châteaux property, Blackberry Farm, which we visit often - there is no signage, and one needs to know exactly where they are going.
The town of Washington is tiny, and many of its buildings are actually part of The Inn - whether for accommodations, or their Shop, but there is a small town there, and well worth a walk around.
From the moment of arrival, at the Valet Parking location, to check-in, one realizes that they are in a different place, and almost a different time - including the classic Rolls Royce parked in the front, for much of our stay. Instead of a traditional check-in, one is escorted to the bar, and given Champagne, or a seasonal drink (Christmas in a Glass, in our case), while everything is taken from the auto, and placed in their lodging. Ours was across the street, in a recently heavily remodeled building.
When the mini-tour of the main property is complete, one is ready to retire to their room, hopefully before dining at the wonderful restaurant.
Our room was lovely, and seemed to be quite new. My wife got her "walk-in shower," and the only minor complaints that I had were that the closet was sort of small, and the bedroom furniture could have used more, larger drawers. Fortunately, we only had clothing for our short stay, and not from a week of business meetings. Still, those were my only quibbles.
The bed (king) was very comfortable, and offered plenty of fluffy pillows.
The entire property is historic, and lovely, with little nooks and crannies, that beg to be explored.
One's stay includes a very full, and great Continental Breakfast, plus there is also a supplemental a la carte breakfast menu, to choose from. My recommendation is to only split one of those a la carte selections, as the portions are quite large. We did just that for two days - one Continental and one supplemental a la carte offerings. On the last day, we only managed the Continental breakfasts, and that was more than enough. Each item/dish was wonderful, and their "Flight of Juices" something to savor!
Now, the real highlight - the dining:
We dined at The Inn all three nights, and got to explore the menus in good depth. There are three Chef's Tasting Menus, an "Enduring Classics," a seasonal "Menu of the Moment," and then a vegetarian "The Good Earth." Each menu contains four courses (plus assorted Amuse-Bouches), but that is where things get interesting, and exciting. Unlike many Chef's Tasting Menus, one is NOT limited to any one. They are all "mix and match," and though a dish might be listed as a Main Course, it can be pared down in size, to fit into any selection. The same is true for each "Appetizer" in that it can become a Main Course.
Normally, I spend little time on a "vegetarian menu," but made several exceptions here, and am glad that I did. Three of the dishes, that appear there, were excellent as starter courses on our more omnivore-related selections: the Cauliflower "Steak" w/ Yellow Indian Curry, Green Grapes and Candied Walnuts, the Aged Gouda Macaroni and Cheese w/ Black Truffels, and the Lemon Black Pepper Risotto. Each was great.
Also, each night, there were a few minor changes, so probably 16 different dishes, and then some variations.
During three meals, we only did duplicate selections twice: The Filet of Antarctic Sea Bass w/ Lemon Vodka Sauce and Lilliputian Shrimp and Pork Dumplings, and the Lemon Black Pepper Risotto. Now, we did think that the Lemon was a bit heavy on the Sea Bass, but note that we ordered it twice.
The only other comment on the dishes is that we both felt that the Tin of Sin: American Osetra Caviar w/ Peekytoe Crab and Cucumber Rillette could have perhaps used a bit of Créme Fraîche, or similar. Again, a tiny comment on a great dish.
We stuck to the Sommelier's Wine Pairings from Sommelier Lindsey Fern. With the exception of one pairing, where I though that maybe a Kabinet Riesling would have gone better, than the Spätlese poured, each wine was perfect, and enjoyable. On our last night, I finally decided to play around with the wine list, and Ms Fern and I had fun. That wine list has both great depth and breadth, and if one has any questions, Ms Fern is ready to assist.
Now things REALLY get fun. There is a Dessert and Dessert Drinks list, but I highly recommend that one do a Cheese Course, whether Desserts are ordered, or not. First, we are big fans of a great Cheese Course, and delight when we find one - we did at The Inn, and with a fun twist. The Inn has a Fromagier (think a Sommelier for the Cheese), named Cameron (also the resident Tea Guru), who will help select and serve the Cheese Course via Faira (pronounced Farah), the Cheese Cow. Cameron can also work with you, on pairing any leftover wine, with the cheese - if you have any leftover wine.
Cameron also usually hosts the Afternoon Tea, though was off, when we did that - however, he had plenty of recs. that he shared the night before, so we did not feel alone, or abandoned. The Afternoon Tea is well worth the effort, and one WILL be rewarded.
I thought that I would never encounter a property, that provided more than Blackberry Farm, but I might just have found one - regardless, they are close in perfection, and for me to mention Blackberry Farm is high praise - very high praise, indeed.
We will return, as soon as possible.

Thank you for your review and generous comments. It is a privilege to be compared to our Relais & Chateaux colleagues as the culinary and hotel standards are very demanding, and we are pleased that your experience was reflective of those expectations. Thank you for your thorough and helpful review and please come and see us again!

We spent two nights at The Inn at Little Washington to celebrate our 10th anniversary. It was a great experience. Service was prompt and friendly. The room was immaculate. I read another review that complained the view was of the parking lot. I'm pretty sure we had the same room, and if you choose to look past the end of your nose, the view included the parking lot, but also the Town of Washington, with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the not too far distance.

The room was immaculate, and housekeeping service wonderful and discreet. I'd love to see the behind-the-scenes communications that let the staff know when you're out of the room for them to service it! Turn down service the first night had a special little touch - a little story book called The Secret Ingredient. It was a charming story, and came with a sample of the secret ingredient. The second night, the turn down service included a little souvenir magnet. In the afternoon, there were some fresh-baked cookies left in our room for us. The service was equal to other 5-star hotels I've stayed in. Nowhere did I get the sense of staff seeming mocking or obsequious, as stated in other reviews.

For dinner the first night, we had the a la carte dining menu. Everything was very good, but my favorite was the Black Cod in a Lemon Vodka sauce. Cooked perfectly, with a well blended sauce that nicely complemented the fish. I never think about mushrooms and fish going together, but I was pleasantly surprised how well they went together.

We asked for assistance in choosing a wine. We have been very interested in trying local wines here in MD lately, so we decided to try a local wine this night. My husband requested a chardonnay. We were directed to the house chardonnay, which was also quite reasonable priced, but still very good.

There was a little bit of a lag at times between some courses. But since the dining there WAS the evening's activity, that was fine - we were in no hurry. Only between one or two courses did it seem a little more than leisurely.

The second night, we had the tasting menu with the paired wines. Not only was all the food very good, the paired wines were well thought out. The sommelier was well versed - as you would expect - and not only explained why each wine was chosen, but also discussed the region the wines were produced in. As pretenders to knowing a bit about wine, but always willing to learn more, it was one of the best parts of the evening. I am not very familiar with chardonnays, having been raised in a family that usually appreciates the crisper wines. I was able to ask John the sommelier a few questions, and he even brought over another chardonnay for me to try so I could understand better the answer to my questions.

The pacing this night was better, with no lags. We had the Black Cod again as part of the tasting menu, and it remained my favorite. It was as well done the second night as the first. A close second for me was the chocolate bread pudding. The funny thing about these choices is that in general, I care neither for cod nor bread pudding. These two courses may well change my mind - but only if I can get them as well prepared as they were here.

A word about the portions - a number of people have talked about leaving the table still hungry, or being disappointed with the size of the portions. Neither my husband nor I were anything but full after leaving the table on both nights. My husband is a big eater with a fast metabolism, and he was more than satisfied.

Both mornings, I was more than happy with the house breakfast. Greek-style yogurt with fresh berries and house-made granola, a selection of juices, and fresh-baked breads with house or local made jams provided plenty of food. My husband opted for the cooked breakfast on the first day, and had the eggs benedict, which were quite tasty. The sausage and the bacon was also very good. The second morning, he was satisfied with just the house breakfast.

We took the full day of our stay to wander around the town. We took a walk down the Field of Dreams Path. It was a lovely walk combining nature with good bird-watching opportunities with domesticated farm animals - chickens, sheep, and a llama.

We look forward to coming back for another stay.
