A stunning getaway with a real emphasis on getting away from it all. Remote in the best sense, with superior views, lovely hikes, a gorgeous pool and hot tub, amazing suites, superior service, breathtaking interiors superbly appointed, and personal but not intrusive service. I especially loved the healthful yet interesting and flavorful breakfast choices, the elegant dining room, the interior design, and the romantic chance to stargaze via telescope or just on our balcony. Memory for a lifetime right here in Virginia — already planning to go back for a birthday or a random winter getaway!

+1
We spent 6 nights, which is likely longer than a typical stay, in a Pinnacle Cottage- Dan River Suite- Oriole #70. The property is vast, pretty and incredibly well maintained. The staff is young, polite and very well trained. Our suite was beautifully decorated, comfortable and well appointed, but the views were the absolute best part. We could see north and west from our rooms and decks to enjoy a wonderfully different view of the mountains, as the sun shifted throughout the day, and an incredible sunset each evening. The bed and bathtub were among the best we've ever had....again, both with an amazing western view. We had everything we needed and the staff was so wonderful, that nothing was more than a phone call away. The ATV tour was a blast. The spa is well designed, professionally run and the treatments were fine. The observatory show was disappointing to us, maybe because we have an amateur telescope at home and have seen many of the same objects we were shown. They were captured as photos on a couple of monitors. The biggest negative for us, maybe because we stayed longer than most, was the food. The dining options are limited and leaving the property for a restaurant is quite a long adventure of at least 30-40 minutes. We tried the 19th Pub twice and found the options limited and less than inspired. We had one dinner at Elements and were definitely not wowed by options, presentation or flavors for the price point. We did enjoy the breakfast and some sandwiches via in-room dining, but again the options are limited. Although we're not golfers, like most of the guests, we did walk some of the course to check out the views along the way- gorgeous. I do have to mention Paula Stevens who was beyond helpful and patient with my many inquiries prior to and during our stay. It was a splurge for us to visit a special place to enjoy incredible views, as the lodging, dining and activities were all quite pricey. With additions and adjustments in dining venue options, menu offerings and flavor, the overall experience would have been so much better. Definitely worth the visit, but we will likely not return and will opt for another location when we return to the area.

Dear CEC1024,
Thank you for your comments and observations. While a longer length of stay is unusual for Primland, we can still make an effort to meet the needs of such a guest. I am sorry that we did not respond to our lack diversity in the food program as we should have. We could have easily prepared items for you that were not offered on the menu, and possibly satisfy your appetite for something different. But, as I said, this is for our team to acknowledge and make recommendations and offerings to you. Again, my apologies.
I hope you reconsider returning to Primland. We will do our best to make you more comfortable the next time.
Sincerely,
Mara Bouvier

Can't say enough about Primland. We stayed in the main lodge and had a wonderful time. The staff was very friendly and outgoing. Our room overlooked the woods and the golf course & was beautiful. The golf course ranks up there with one of the best I have played. Very isolated / wooded location which only adds to the great atmosphere. Most definitely recommend if you are traveling through this part of VA.

A fabulous property and team try very hard but not very experienced. Difficult cell reception in this remote area. Satellite TV is used which is not best of class. Understaffed and many calls from room get unanswered. Still worth the trip, but they can easily take the next step up to 5 stars plus.

The grounds of Primland are extraordinary. Hiking trails cut up and down through the gorgeous treeline of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Wild turkey and white-tailed deer are seen as you traverse the resort. Mother Nature has done a wonderful job at this remote destination. My friend and I traveled six hours down to the resort to celebrate a milestone birthday along with some smaller accomplishments. Although communicated to the reservations staff, there was no congratulatory champagne nor note in the room upon arrival. Not a big deal but would have been a nice touch. The check-in concierge was stone-faced and not the 'warm' hospitality that I had read about in other reviews. The room was adequate although the sofa cushions were slumped and although there was a kitchenette with small refrigerator and wine fridge, there was only a corkscrew and a very small spoon for the Keurig. No other cutlery or dishes available other than wine glasses. Housekeeping had not placed a hand towel in the half bath so we were forced to dry our hands on a cloth napkin. Additionally there was very little light in the vanity area of the full bath. Beds and linens are very comfortable. In addition to the hiking, outdoor activities are excellent - horseback riding, RTV trails, clay shooting. Spa is small and underwhelming, although I received a great massage but was a little disappointed that the Relaxation Room was in disarray after I returned to it after my treatment. Had to call someone to tidy it up. Food is outrageously over-priced and our first night at the pub, they brought out the wrong dish and I had to wait while they prepared the correct one. Meanwhile my friend's food sat there getting cold as they did not want to start without me. There was no apology or offer to comp any portion of the meal as a result of their error. The next night we ate at Elements and whilst the food was better, the overall price was ridiculous. Since the resort is so remote, you have few options unless you want to 'pack in' your own provisions which offsets the desire to be pampered and getting away from fixing meals, etc. I would say that 70% of the staff was pleasant which the other 30% being typical service providers, interested in just getting their job done. That wouldn't be an issue if they did their job properly but with errors in the restaurant, housekeeping, spa, it leaves one with the feeling that this Resort does not merit a full 4 star rating.

Yes, they are a full-size pull out bed.
Best views:
Lodge facing valley
Cardinal East
Cardinal West
If you go to Primland's website, you can see floor plans and pics of the "Fairway Cottages."
Any of the fairway cottages will have a nice view. These are set back so far from the precipice that your husband should have no trouble at all.
Woodpecker is two floors, if I remember correctly, but Cardinals are all one floor with no lofts. Sparrow may be as well, we've never actually stayed in that one.
AVOID: treehouse, pinnacle
Some of the more rustic (but still very nice) cabins also have views, but many of them have high decks looking out onto a valley and might be an issue.
Enjoy! Really, you could get a room with no windows whatsoever and still have a wonderful time at Primland. :-)
Yes to fridge and coffee maker - don't recall microwave. Also not sure about the cappuccino.
The Wood Pecker West spectacular views, fireplace and balcony. We were treated like royalty
and we were able to find a Primland special.
Mid week best price scenario.
You could go for a walk/hike on an easy trail that starts by the golf course and goes in a loop back to the start, then have refreshments on the expansive terrace on the back of the lodge. This is the trail where you can do geocaching too. The views are beautiful all around!
