We stayed for 3 nights prior to the second lockdown. We had a fantastic stay in the suite at the top of the hotel. Large, spacious room, with lovely bathroom and roll top bath. The staff here are lovely and go out of their way to ensure everything is ok, despite the additional restraints that Covid has placed on the hospitality trade. Breakfasts are amazing, lots to eat and good quality products used. We spent another night at a local 5 star hotel and I have to say, the George Townhouse was out of the two by far the best. Shipston itself is a lovely town, with great quality local taps and Italian restaurants within five minutes walk. I would most definitely recommend this hotel and look forward to booking again.
We spent two nights here prior to the second national lockdown, mainly to visit my husband's brother who is in a care home on the outskirts of Shipston. Shipston is a pretty, small market town and this hotel is bang in the centre. We had a lovely large bedroom on the top floor at the back with a view of the church and the country beyond. There was a bath in the room, as well as an en-suite shower room. The bed was blissfully comfortable and there was no noise (being at the back of the hotel, away from the high street). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The breakfasts were very good, the dinners perfectly acceptable (I particularly liked the garlic bread and the risotto that was available on our first night) and the staff outstanding. My husband and I are both exempt from wearing face masks and the staff were absolutely fine with this - in fact, we liked the hotel because they weren't like prison wardens about all the Covid rules. Of course they followed the rules (for those who worry about such things), but they had a balanced attitude towards them which made it more bearable for me who finds the masks extremely off-putting and upsetting.
We very much enjoyed our stay at The George Townhouse.
Location was pretty good for visiting various towns in The Cotswolds and Batsford Arboretum, not far down the road.
This gastro-pub/boutique hotel is located in the middle of a lovely market village too.
The staff are professional and polite. Could not fault them.
They are super-covid friendly and abiding by all the rules. I felt very comfortable there from that point of view.
Evening meal and breakfasts were very good - also no complaints there. The garlic bread is superb.
The room was comfortable but too warm, as the heater in the bathroom could not be turned down and the duvet was super-thick.
Sadly we couldn't give an excellent due to the thin walls. My husband heard the guy nextdoor snoring all night and the street noise could be heard loud and clear (although because of 10pm curfew, it was early and didn't last long). Such a shame as we did truly love the place.
The staff and owners deserve everyone's support as they were doing everything excellently and by the book. Thank you. We truly enjoyed our stay before being locked down again.
I was looking forward to this stay in the town I grew up in. Unfortunately the first night of my 2 day stay was a complete disaster. My room was disappointing to say he least! There was no information provided to explain internet connection (had to ring the hotel from the hotel car park on my mobile as no one on site would respond), how to operate the TV (the remote provided was dead and replaced for the second night), who to contact for any problems along with a room that needed some attention and a handle on the WC cistern. I showed a photo to the manager and the next day I had a handle for the toilet cistern. During my departure I happened across the cleaners and it was apparent what part of the problem was.
I had a meal that first evening in the restaurant and can honestly say it was the worst sirloin steak I have ever had; over cooked (not medium rare but a well done medium), the steak knife provided couldn’t cut through it and it contained bone. I left most of it and was thankfully I’d ordered a side salad. I’ve since found out that you can get bone in a sirloin steak but it was the first time for me in 40 years. I won’t mention failure to fulfil a drinks order by the manager. Again I’m at fault in not raising these issues at the time but in my defence I was hosting guests and didn’t want to make a fuss in their presence. On the positive side the serving staff were great.
That evening I managed about 3 hours sleep as there was a constant drone of an extractor fan. That turned out to be my fault at I finally found a window open hiding behind the window blind that only went half way up and hid the top highlight casement.
Admittedly this all happened with Covid restrictions but I can’t see any excuse for not preparing a room properly for a new guest, providing information for guests and not sourcing good produce for the restaurant; particularly with the prices charged for room and in the restaurant.
Stayed here for 3 nights and everything was perfect. We had a lovely room with a rain shower and very comfortable bed. The staff were all lovely and friendly and really looked after us. We booked direct so breakfast was included - and was lovely (those pork and leek sausages and the artisan vegan sausages too!) We felt welcome and very much at home! What more could you ask for?!
