It's important to note that these units are individually owned. This review is for unit 917. While this is an older property the location of the resort couldn't be more perfect. The rooms have amazing views and it is very close to the beach. The balcony is large enough to sit on and enjoy the ocean. The day we checked in Wilmington had near record low temperatures, 50 degree highs and lows in the 30's. When we got to our room we turned the heat on and there was a terrible burnt smell coming from the heater. We notified the front desk who offered to get us a spray for odors. We tried that the next morning but it didn't help. We then notified them again and they sent maintenance to look at it. He changed the filter and then said that there wasn't really anything that could be done because they weren't using a heat pump but heat strips and that was what we were smelling. The resort was fully booked so we couldn't change rooms so we tried to just deal with it on Thursday and Friday but the smell was so awful that I had a constant headache when I was in the room. Saturday morning we turned the heat off and just wore sweaters and wrapped up in a blanket while we were in the room. By Sunday afternoon the smell was more or less gone and the temperatures had warmed up to the low 70"s so we didn't need the heat. The owner of this unit definitely needs to upgrade the heating system. The staff was very nice and tried to be helpful but this needs to be addressed. There were also other minor issues- rusty shower curtain rod, makeup mirror and toilet tissue holders that fell off if they were touched.

We had the best 5 night stay here!
-Excellent customer service & check in/out
-Quiet & pristine beaches
-2 mile beach walk to boardwalk/restaurants
-Comfortable 1 bedroom suites with kitchenette
(Bring bottled water - resort tap water doesn’t taste like regular water!)
-Great value on ground floor walk out units
- We saw Dolphins (twice) & the most spectacular sunrises/sunsets!

NOT what I was expecting for the price. I was expecting a nice recently renovated room in a well maintained facility. The price you pay is strictly for the best location of any place on the beach and the views because the rest is just disappointing. First the water is AWFUL! I mean the nastiest smell and I seriously was gagging brushing my teeth the first night since we got there late and had no idea the water is so bad.

The room was “renovated” meaning new bedroom furniture and kitchen. The couch was old and the pull out couch was so bad we bought an air mattress. The mattress in the room was terrible and creaked at every move. We got no sleep between the terrible mattress and the bright light blaring in the bedroom window from the hall. This is an old motel that got some new things and charge like it’s a nice condo. The bathroom toilet ran all the time, the shower had zero pressure and the ceiling was peeling. No one wanted to take a shower the water smell was so bad (but we did). We spent our first actual beach day at the store getting gallons of water and paper products so we did not have to wash dishes and smell the sulfur.

The restaurant charged too much for over cooked basic breakfast. I have had better crappy breakfasts in a cheap hotel. They also serve that nasty water in a glass!

The hallways are those of a cheap motel and the huge windows displaying the beautiful beach views are filthy. The owners of the “condotel” rooms must have gotten cheap deals to be ok with the low level of quality. So glad I’m home to get some sleep and we will never go back to this location again.

I was skeptical about this location due to the reviews online and the truth is you can’t please everybody. My family had an AMAZING time at this resort. It was MORE than I expected honestly. We stayed in room 204. It was CLEAN, remodeled and we had an amazing view of both the sound and the ocean. The location was great at the end of the island. We enjoyed walking both sides. The customer service we experienced was fantastic at the front desk. Check in took less than 3 minutes. We used the indoor pool several times and it was clean and heated. The parking garage was fine and was easily accessible from the rooms without walking through the lobby each time. This has easily became our new favorite location at wrightsville beach and we will be coming back!

I just had an awesome stay, with my family, at Shell Island Resort. I’ve really no complaints. Staff was friendly, rate was fair. The room was spectacular, with a little kitchenette, a living room area with panoramic bay windows to the beach. These were next to the oceanfront balcony. The beds were in a separate room (like a suite). There were TWO bathrooms, so helpful to a family. The location was wonderful. Two pools. I could just go on and on. One never knows what one will get, shopping in the internet. I’ve had places looked great on the website, but really sucked once you got there. But, this is the real deal. They were very accommodating, we were having so much fun, they worked with us to stay an extra day, same rate/same room. Ima stay there again. Highly recommended.

Sorry,I didn't know they had 2 different suites. I know the room we were in had a kitchen and sofa dining table, it was rather large.

If you request a room on the 2nd-4th floor (best to call with your request ahead of time we are now in our peak season) on the south end of the resort, you can actually walk from the garage directly to your room without going through the lobby/elevator. The second-best option would be to request a room close to the elevator. Also feel free to park temporarily in our loading zone when you are coming or going, there is an elevator right inside the front entrances. We look forward to welcoming you!
