Mohonk is a lovely resort nestled on acres and acres of beautiful scenery. It is a great place for couples or families but beware there is a price to be paid for your pleasure. We booked a basic room for two adults in August and the basic rate is $300.00 per person. When we went to check out they added on gratuity of $71.76 and overnight taxes of $47.84 so the total for a one night stay was $722.38 for two people for one night.

Included for that price you have a buffet breakfast. lunch and dinner and tea and cookies at 4:00 pm. The food was quite good with a large selection of salad, main course and desserts to please all palates. There is also an outdoor lunch and dinner served which included hot dogs hamburgers, fries and lobster. The selection does not match the indoor meals served but there is still plenty to eat.

You have use of an indoor heated pool, however there is insufficient seating for the crowds that use the pool. There is a change room with only two showers and lockers. If you want to use the steam room or spa there is a daily charge of $25.00. Only over night guests are allowed to use the beach area. There is a small minature gold area which is also included. There is a lake in which you can use canoes, paddle boats and row boats. They have bikes but it is $30..00 per person per day to rent a bike. Horse back riding is $45.00 for 45 minutes for a walking only tour. You pay for most activities at Mohonk.

The rooms are quite nice with plenty of furnishings. Most rooms have a very musty odor. There are no television in the rooms you have to pay to rent a tv. The room comes with shampoo, conditioner and hand cream. Check in is a 4:00 pm and check out is at 1:00 pm. The room comes with a bar fridge and blow dryer.

There is ample seating all through the hotel with beautiful rocking chairs outside to sit and enjoy the views. The ground are fantastic with a beautiful garden.

There is only one bar on the premises. The gift shop has high end toys and novelties but if you forgot your tooth brush or underpants you can forget about buying it here.

The evenings entertainment when we were there was a classical guitarist.

It is a lovely place if you like hiking and relaxing, just make sure are prepared to spend a lot of money for your stay.

Three friends off for the day to celebrate a milestone birthday of one. (no, WHICH milestone is not relevant!) We checked into the SPA and were greeted graciously and efficiently. Our appointments were on time to the minute and the treatments (2 of us had 80 minute massages and facials one had reflexology instead of the facial) The two LOVED our treatments and felt they either met or exceeded expectations of previous spa days elsewhere. Our friend who had reflexology was deeply disappointed stating that the masseuse really didn't seem to know what she was doing or how to make the massage feel good or worthwhile.
Amenities in the women's locker/shower area were sufficient- not over the top.
After our treatments, we walked through the building to the dining room for a late lunch. (we were all glad we had chosen to only go for the day and not stay over for we walked through the building and saw multiple types of rooms being cleaned. We peaked in and though some were lavish suites and others small rooms, they all looked as if they had seen their better days and unequivicably not worth the $1,000 a night price for a suite for 3!
Where the day really took a nose dive was the dining room. $70 a person for an endless buffet of medicore, unimaginative, unsatisfying large group slop. Not a piece of seafood, not tunafish or egg sald but this ridiculous selection of really unappealing Indian food, canned items for the salad bar and a dessert array that turned off my two sugar addicted friends to the point where we ate the cookies I brought for the ride up instead of making a selection. As the audience is captive- I suppose they feel they can get away with it- and the shame is, they do!
After lunch we sat on the porch looking at the glorious view, seeing the horse driven carriage pass by, admiring the beautiful gardens and paths.

Service in the spa was great, the valet guys were adorable- the rest of the service was just average.

I have been curious about Mohonk for decades. I am so glad I went. Would I go again? I think so-but would pack a lunch and sneak it in!

The outdoor facilities are terrific, and as a family vacation spot, there is something for everyone across generations. Beyond that, the grand old lady is a major disappointment.

The hotel appears to lack good management, especially at the front desk and in the restaurant. When asking for help, personnel at the front desk are courteous but their assistance minimal...When asking how to get to a location, they seemed put upon. The food, just passable..when sending back a main course (which in over 50 years of travel we have never done), the wait staff tried to be accommodating but were overwhelmed. The restaurant manager kept waltzing by our table, never once trying to assist. On another occasion, even though there were only two of us, our main courses were served at different times.

The spa treatment themselves were excellent, but the facility not tidy. .. The showers dirty (even though there were many attendants chatting with each other) and the lounge towels recycled from client to client. For one fitness class, the instructor never showed up.

Our room was tired. The wall paper old and so infused with the remnants of smoke from the old, working fireplace that our eyes were watery and uncomfortable whenever we were in the room.

We stayed at Mohonk for two nights/3 days to celebrate my parent's 80th birthdays. We had 3 generations under one roof. We chose Mohonk as we thought that it would provide something for all ages to do & were not disappointed. Hiking, kayaking, swimming on their beach, walking in gardens, family meals, evening entertainment.... It all worked!

The weakness is in the range of ability of the staff. Some of the staff clearly had experience & knew their jobs, such as the folks at the boat dock and most of the dining & bar servers. The junior staff struggle to handle basic needs like getting our party seated in the right dining room, and getting luggage from our rooms to the car with over an hour lead time. Not a deal breaker, but took my rating from a 5 to a 4.

Mohonk is a very old Mountain House surrounded by 4000 pristine acres. It is right out of the 1800's and I was astonished at how well kept every inch of the place was. It is huge with hanging photos, ephemera, old terrariums and other displays all over the place. I think it would take a year to see everything!

We had a wonderful time - the hiking is terrific, especially if you are up for the Rock Scramble (the labyrinth trail) which is very, very hard but amazing. My husband loved the mountain biking and I loved sitting by the MANY fireplaces and just getting comfy and reading.

This is NOT the kind of First Class that a Four Seasons or the Ritz is. Mohonk is very special and incredibly well preserved but not a luxury hotel. It is expensive! But if you look around you will understand why. The place must cost a fortune to run - and it is run exceptionally well.

Bottom line review:

1.Every staff member we met was nice, helpful and kind. No exceptions.

2. Food was so so - that is why this is a "very good" review and not excellent. The main dining room is awesome, but unless you have kids it gets "old" pretty quickly. The downstairs "non buffet" dining room is much much better for dinner with the menu being much better than the buffet. As for the buffet - I found the food lacking, sort of like a bad wedding for 500 people. The only exception was the Sunday Buffet which for some reason was heads and tails over all the others.

3.We sprung for a Victorian Fireplace room. Loved it. The view was gorgeous and going to sleep with the fire as lovely. My gripe is that there was no bathtub which at the price we paid there should have been one. Pay the extra money to get a great view, its worth it.

4. Common areas - Humongous fireplaces all over the place, very cosy.

5. 4:00 Tea and cookies. Could have been more inspired.

5. The bar - hidden at the end of the hall. Needs a total renovation to be more cozy. Looks like a cheap strip mall bar. Mixed drinks at $12 plus tax and tip were too expensive.

6. Activities. We were there when it was cold so the only activities were biking and hiking. Worked for us!

7. The Spa. At first I was not happy that they charge guests $25 to use the facilities (I did not get a treatment). But I realized that if they didn't they would have 100 people in the hot tub! I actually paid to use it both days! The place is really lovely. I enjoyed the outdoor tub (not sure about the mineral stuff??) as did everyone I met over two days. you just sort of slip in and say AHHHHH. I also enjoyed the sauna and steam room and particularly the "Veranda" where I just lazed about in a comfy lounger and drank tea, read and snoozed. Also two great shops.

All in all - we will return to this lovely historical gift of a hotel that is only 1 1/2 hours from our house.

I believe you have to pay for water and snacks throughout the day. Drinks are with meals. You can get tea and store bought cookies at tea time.

Dont think so, as said in previous answers, they check every car entering the area. Moreover, they have this valet parking which won't suit your plans. There are many nice restaurants and caffes in New Paltz, though.
