I will not be a "one issue wonder" that gives a place a "terrible" rating as result of a single displeasure.
The Ohana is good hotel. We stayed in a “Residence with Balcony” room.
Room appointments were first class,.the internet was very functional and the swimming pool was magnificent.
We found the breakfast quite satisfactory. Plenty of variety in a buffet style and eggs cooked to order. Maybe some visitors would wonder why the hash browns, bacon and grilled ham are absent.
The staff with whom we interacted were a varied lot. Front desk, as noted by other travellers, seemed efficient but a little distant/cold, breakfast staff a bit better and the cleaning staff cheerful, friendly and eager to please. A particular thank you to the two housekeeping staff who helped us with a minor issue on our last night.
Our primary dissatisfaction was with the room we were allocated. We picked a “Residence with Balcony” room based on the information and photos on their website. Unfortunately we were given a room on the opposite side of the hotel to those shown. There were no lights or table on our balcony, a claim that has now been deleted from their website. The balconies are also smaller and the chairs of a lower quality.
The street side – the lively side looks over a bar and down the street is a very large local market. There are narrow views (as per the website photos) of the river. Some travellers have advised that the stench from the market is not pleasant. It is a typical Asian aroma! We spent a long time wandering with the locals through it.
The opposite side has much more expansive views.of the river, in the distance and perfect views (about 100m away) of Wat Ounalom. Unfortunately, in between are sheds and shanty style shelters. The airconditioning from rear side of the building to the left is noisy, but certainly not unbearably so. The hotel, in a direct response to me, has stated "the sheds and the dilapidated building that you mention do not belong to the hotel and are not on hotel property so there is nothing that we can do about that, you must bear in mind that whilst Cambodia and Phnom Penh are developing quickly they are doing so from a very low base, thus parts of the city does still have a ‘rough and ready’ look about it, again out of the control of the hotel". Obviously they missed the whole point of my correspondence, which was that they should not engage in misleading advertising.
My suggestion when booking is weigh up what you are looking for and then make a decision. Unfortunately I have no idea how you are able to book a particular side, as they are both classified and priced identically– maybe the hotel can advise in a response, rather than reiterate my positives, which seems to be the norm for most places responding to any criticism.
On our return from Siem Reap we booked an alternative hotel for 7 nights.

Dear Maurice, firstly we would like to thank you for taking the time to write a review of your stay at the Ohana Phnom Penh Palace Hotel, your feedback is very much appreciated. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. However, concerning your dissatisfaction with the room you were allocated we have already discussed this via email. You state that in our email correspondence with you that we, “missed the whole point of my [your] correspondence” and that we “should not engage in misleading advertising”. We do not believe we ‘missed the whole point’ of your concern nor that we actively engage ‘in misleading advertising’. Indeed, once you pointed out to us the website discrepancy between balcony rooms on opposite sides of the hotel, we immediately corrected this oversight and informed you that we had altered the website room description, thus rapidly acting upon guest feedback which is within our control. As for the view that you complained about, this is not within our control, and we stand by our reply which you have quoted. Our website states ‘The private balconies of these rooms open up to fresh air and views of the river and city skyline’ which is factually correct, thus cannot be deemed as ‘misleading advertising’. From the balcony of the room you were staying in there is a view stretching off following the river from near the hotel to over 20km in the distance, plus as shown in one of the photos you have posted you experienced almost uninterrupted city skyline views overlooking all the nearby surrounding buildings. It is interesting that you have only chosen to post photos showing the view to the immediate left and the immediate right of your balcony, you have not posted a photo of the view you had directly in front of you which you actually describe in your review as ‘expansive’ and ‘perfect views’, showing the river stretching off into the distance and Wat Ounalom, not having posted such a photo could also be classed as being 'misleading' [edit 12-6-18 - after we posted our initial reply you added a third photo which is indeed directly in front, however looking down, you have still not added a photo of the view which you describe as ‘expansive’ and ‘perfect’] Ultimately, Phnom Penh is Phnom Penh, and the hotel has no control over the appearance of buildings that it does not own. The view you had was an extensive view of Phnom Penh, as per our website description, and the hotel cannot be at fault if you do not like the appearance of the city in general.

The Ohana is centrally located and within walking distance to a number of tourist attractions. The staff were very kind and very helpful. They gave us clear expectations on how much we should be paying for tuk tuks which helped us from getting taken advantage of. The rooms were very clean and the morning breakfasts were always a good start to the day. We had room service for dinner one night which was not our finest meal in Phnom Penh but everything else at the Ohana met or exceeded my expectations. The pool was always quiet which was nice for us as we mostly had it to ourselves.

In a side street near the waterfront, the Ohana Palace has large clean rooms. The swimming pool though smallish is good and the rooftop bar/breakfast area also has plunge pools as well as sunbeds (and great views). Breakfast was good. There are many bars and restaurants locally and many 'sights' are within walking distance. There is a good laundry one block North.

Comfortable bed, clean facilities. Was upgraded to a river view as I arrived super early and they let me check in early. This was great as I was shattered. Staff very friendly. Lovely pool which gets the sun pretty much all day. Gorgeous Jacuzzi and great service in the evening on the rooftop! They let me stay by the pool after checkout before my flight which I really appreciated. Breakfast is good, great selection for the average Joe, lovely bread however being vegan I could only really have dry bread and fruit. Would be good if they had baked beans, soy\cocunut milk etc. Really good location, right by the river which is lovely for walks. Be careful of pickpockets along there as I had a very close encounter last night as I sat on the wall watching the sun set and no one intervened nearby! Went to the moon bar down the road which was lovely too.

I enjoyed my stay here, the hotel had a nice atmosphere, very pleasant staff and excellent value for money. We arrived very late in the evening at past midnight but the room was ready and the staff were available to help us check in which was very quick. It is not on the main quay overlooking the river but is instead up a side street just leading away from it which meant it was away from the main traffic. We could see the river from the left of the balcony and then the market to the left. Location wise it is excellently placed for Sisowath Quay, the Palace and the Silver Pagoda which were all within walking distance, we walked to other areas like the Russian Market and prison, but if you didn’t want to do this the hotel flagged you down a TukTuk and made sure you were not fleeced on the price. The street it was on had a massive market at the end and it was fairly noisy if you had your window open and went from about 5am to 10pm, however, since it had air conditioning it was no real issue as you can just shut the door. There was a balcony (no chairs), good sized bed, bathroom and minibar, safe etc, it was clean and whilst nice was a bit dated. Breakfast on the roof was lovely as you could sit outside and watch the river traffic go by, food was both hot and cold Asian and Western, good variety however, some of it was obviously from the night before. There was an omelette cooking station if you wanted to have these fresh each day. There was a pool on the ground floor which looked lovely but we didn’t use it, there were plenty of seats around it, Jacuzzi area and a bar nearby. I would recommend, it was a nice hotel, excellent value for money and a good location.
