Very charming. Friendly people. Cousy. Fantastic Staff highlighting Marcia, Alessandra, Gabriel, Paola (sorry if I miss someone). Three points to improve - the internet MUST be MUUUUCH better as the tv channels options are a joke so you should be able to watch things on internet on your room. Brazilian country music should be banned on the bar and restaurant. Last point, pleaseee better whisky options (21 years, better brands). I'll be return for sure but if the internet remains the same will be our last try...

My wife and I have stayed in numerous small, privately-owned hotels around the state of Rio de Janeiro over the last decade and this one is by far our favorite. From the moment you pass through the front gate, you feel like you have stepped into a peaceful, cool oasis. The property is lushly landscaped, with buildings done in a soothing mix of whitewashed walls, dark-stained woods and dark grey paving stones. The reception area and lounge are cool and breezy, opening onto a raised, grassy area in front of the beach with tables and chairs which is bookended by the restaurant and bar. Our room, on the second floor of the garden wing, continued the white, dark brown, and dark grey themes, with a vaulted ceiling and a skylit bathroom. The furnishings are simple but tasteful, with modern fixtures in the bathroom. There was a quiet split-style air conditioner, an adjustable ceiling fan, and a flat-screen television with DVD player. Dark brown shuttered doors opened onto a balcony overlooking the lushly landscaped swimming pool area ands its soothing waterfall. One of our favorite things to do at the Maasai is to sit on the deck by the bar sipping a caipirinha while watching the the sun set over the beach, with its striking vista of the colonial church perched on a rocky promontory extending out into the ocean. At night, the grounds are tastefully lighted to permit continued enjoyment of the landscaping. The food in the hotel restaurant is good and the menu surprisingly diverse, and there are also several other decent restaurants within walking distance of the hotel (our favorite being Casa da Praia, a converted beach-front house featuring grilled fresh seafood about 2 blocks away). The staff are friendly and helpful, though Portuguese is a must. The Maasai is not a Club Med or a Park Hyatt -- it is, though, unlike most small, privately-owned hotels around Rio, a place where the owners work hard to get the details right and provide a comprehensive hotel experience. Note, as well, that Saquarema is not Buzios with a chic shopping/dining downtown area and dozens of beaches to choose from -- it's just a quiet, small beach town with surfer's vibe, in our minds, the perfect place to spend a few days just relaxing and enjoying the beach.

This is a tranquil contrast to hectic Rio. We love this indulgent, relaxing and very cool hotel resort and restaurant set beachside with glorious surf and sand views of the very popular Itauna beach, sweeping two kilometers to Saquarema just 100 kms north of Rio de Janeiro. This is the volleyball and surf capital of Brazil with hang gliding and wind surfing available.
Its cold slate floor and warm African timber themes and garden orchids create a welcoming calm. On the breeze filled terrace cafe we sink into a deep chair and watch the surfers ride the long full waves, on and on they dip and glide.
We enjoy a caipirinya Brazilian drink that is sensational. Make sure it's 'com sucre'. R $12 each or $4 Aust. Grilled salmon with capers for two arrives: two very generous servings with rice and potatoes. Salads optional extra. I recommend palm salad. R $99 or $33 AUST for two. Very reasonable and delicious. We could have had fillet mignon for two for same price or chicken or pasta for less. The menu is also in English. Very hard to find that in Brazil. They serve a great fresh mussels appetizer dish but not if you want main course as well unless youre very hungry.
Don't be in a hurry anywhere in Brazil.
Have another drink....
We watch tanned bodies riding the long slow waves.
Groups of Brazilians stroll in casual and comfortable from the beach, bikini clad, all smiles and gesticulations. I love the passion and vowel emphasis of Brazilians...
The body is irrelevant here. Rolls of fat, but it's all in the smiles, ease and joie de vivre. Don't see tourists here in September.
We catch an air con dream taxi home for less than R$10.
This is a fabulous experience and you could stay here pool side overnight or forever.....
19 very elegant air con renovated rooms ground or first floor level with terrace doors onto the tiled terrace. Pristine clean with very friendly staff. Wifi available. Perhaps ask for a room further from restaurant?
We spoke to Lennart the manager in English. He's Swedish but you'd never guess that by his accent mix.. Very warm and personal.
For another great lunch experience try Latitude restaurant 1 km away and owned by a Swiss lady. Delicious change from Brazilian food and slightly cheaper, one block back from beach. See my review on Trip Advisor.

Stayed at the Maasai last month. Beautiful hotel located right on the beach, in front of the surfing spots. The hotel is tastefully decorated in African art and has a large lounge area with TV and sofas and a decking area overlooking the beach. There's a nice little beach bar which does amazing caiprinhas however the food in the hotel was average and the staff don't speak any English. Although one of the staff who communicated with us on email beforehand was really helpful and arranged our transfers from Rio and on to Buzios which were much cheaper than getting them from Rio. At the front of the hotel is a small pool set in the lush grounds with lots of flowers and plants and a sauna and open air games room. The bedrooms are quite small and fairly basic but comfortable with everything you need. Ours was at the back of the hotel with lovely views overlooking the beach. This is bar far the best place to stay in Saquarema although it is a bit of a walk into the main town - probably about 30 mins but there are bike and normal taxis. There isn't a massive amount to do here unless you're surfing - we stayed 3 days and 2 nights which was enough.
