A guide to great outdoor spots in Atlanta would begin and end with a visit to Stone Mountain Park. The park offers an abundance of outdoor activities, but the hike up Stone Mountain, a Georgia landmark and the world's largest granite outcropping, is the major attraction. The hike up the mountain is not strenuous and takes roughly an hour. The view of Atlanta from the top of Stone Mountain is magnificent.

    Tips
    • For those who cannot hike to the top, a gondola regularly travels between the base and summit.

The Silver Comet Trail is just 15 miles northwest of Atlanta and is 61 mile-long paved trail with no motorized vehicles. The trail is a great example of the rail-to-trail initiative happening around the country: turning old and abandoned railroad lines into green spaces for non-motorized recreation.
