Pjk's City Tips

  • The best deals on dining are the various happy hours with half-priced appetizers or two-for-one drinks. You can assemble a nice dinner for half price if you are savvy about it.
  • A few good restaurants are only open on certain days — Bliss, for example, only serves breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays — so a little advance planning is a good idea.
  • Tipping is the usual 15 - 18%.
  • If you stay in Old Town, its easy to reach restaurants, bar happy hours, live music, and departure points for water trips on foot.
  • You can rent a bicycle, scooter, or electric cart, but streets and sidewalks become crowded and you have to worry about parking and damage to the vehicle. It's better to walk.
  • There are a few restaurants where you can dress up for dinner — Latitudes on Sunset Key, for example — but in general, shorts, sandals and a tank or tee shirt will do.
  • Cabs are plentiful for special trips or getting home at night, so saving a taxi company's number on your cell is a good idea.
  • The Southernmost Shell and Cuban Café, 1900 N. Roosevelt Blvd, has a Taco Tuesday special. It's called "Shell" because it's located in a former gas station!

This is a good way to get an idea of what there is to see and do in Key West. The tour guide will relate some of the history of the island, and at each stop you can get off the trolley, wander a bit, and get back on the next one. A comfortable and easy way to get around.

    Tips
    • First trip to Key West? It is a good idea to make the entire loop (approximately 60 mins), noting things of interest. Then do another, getting off and exploring at a few stops.
    • Stop #5: take a photo opp at the Southernmost Point and visit the Butterfly Conservatory.
    • There are military and senior discounts. Ask when you buy your ticket.
    • Stop #6: check out the Hemingway House, lighthouse, and several good restaurants on Petronia St.

One of the best stretches in Key West is Petronia St, beginning at its intersection with Duval Street, and continuing almost to its end at 207 Petronia St #101; the site of Santiago's Bodega. While in between, there are several nice restaurants and a few very nice shops, in my opinion, Santiago's is the best stop of all. It specializes in tapas — hot and cold, meat, seafood and vegetables — plus great sangria is also on offer, both read and white (order a pitcher). Ask the waiter for suggestions not only on what to have, but the order in which the dishes should be brought to the table.

    Tips
    • At #223 Petronia St is Firely, specializing in Southern cooking. For example: fried chicken with mashed potatoes, brown gravy, and ham-hock collard greens.
    • At #310 Petronia St is Wanderlust. You can find works of art from locals, ethnically inspired wares, imported and homegrown accessories, and a range of handcrafted jewelry.
    • At #315 Petronia St is Besame Mucho, a very nice shop for lotions, hand-made jewelry, and clothing.
    • At #411 Petronia St is Bliss — an appropriate name! Whatever you do, share the avocado appetizer, then order one of the special entrees. Free glass of Sangria with each meal!
    • At #300 Petronia St is La Creperie, where you can enjoy a savory or sweet crepe for breakfast or lunch. Try the egg and ham filled crepe, but share.
    • At the intersection with Thomas Street is the famous Blue Heaven where you can eat in the garden with the chickens and cats. The trend here is Lobster Eggs Benedict for breakfast.
    • There is a good happy hour at Santiago's Bodega, starting at 3pm.
    • Some favorites at Santiago's Bodega: beef carpaccio, grilled asparagus, lamb patties, and seasoned grouper.

Sebago's Island T'Ing is one of the best day trips out of Key West. It boards at 9:30am and returns between 4 and 4:30pm depending on conditions, leaving you part of the afternoon and evening free. The trip is on the Pelican, a 41-foot Maine Cat sailing catamaran limited to 20 passengers. The trip includes a snorkeling stop, usually at the reef seven miles south of Key West, or within the Sanctuary five miles away, as well as a guided eco kayak tour around one of the mangrove islands. You eat breakfast and lunch on the boat, and there are fresh-baked cookies and sangria on the return trip!

    • Nature Lover
    Tips
    • There are several places to snorkel and kayak out of Key West, some better than others. Where you go will depend on the air and water conditions.
    • You can change on the boat, but it's easiest to wear your bathing suit with shorts over it. Everything you do on or off the boat will be more comfortable in a bathing suit.
    • You will be told this, but the Pelican allows you to sit on the "trampoline" between the bows. Take advantage!
    • On the trip out, take note of these for later reference: the Tiki Bar at the Galleon, Lagerheads at Simonton beach, the café at the Pier House, Sunset Pier at the Ocean Key Resort.
    • Do not plan a big dinner on the evening of this trip. There is so much food on the boat that you will not need it!
