Barbara A's City Tips

  • If you accidentally drop a coin or a bill, don't step on it and be sure to pick it up quickly — if you don't, it is believed by locals that you are disrespecting the royal family.
  • Public displays of affection are seen as something embarrassing, so try to avoid them.
  • If someone does a "wai" (bowing with hands together) to you, the polite gesture is to do it in return.
  • Try not to shout or get visibly angry — Thai people tend to avoid confrontations.
  • Some restaurants will automatically add a 10% service charge to your bill.
  • For the foodies... Remember to taste some coconut milk, as well as Sang Thip or Mekhong, the local whiskeys.
  • There are ATMs available where you can withdraw cash in local currency (Thai baht), and most types of credit and debit cards are accepted — just keep in mind that your bank may charge a fee for this.
  • You can visit Khao Lak anytime of the year, although from November until the beginning of April, you'll encounter cool weather and almost no rain (perfect for some!).

Riding along on a boat, you'll see some perfect places to photograph and others that you should definitely visit to explore more. This is yet another incredible place in Khao Lak where nature has the spotlight.

Inside this island park, you'll find a little, charming, rustic village, built almost entirely upon stilts. Its people will receive you kindly, and the tranquility of the place will make it a dreamy pit-stop on your journey. You can have a drink and linger, and maybe see the football team training or the kids playing outside. You're bound to enjoy a few moments stopping by Panyi.

An impressive memorial that should not be left off any Khao Lak itinerary. For some it may make a strong impact, and for others a good place for thinking and meditating. It is a reflection of the sad natural disaster that happened in Thailand, but also of how the Thai people recovered together as a community — along with people from all over the globe — making it through day after day and never losing their hope or their smiles.

At Ko Kho Khao, you'll find lots to see and you can even sneak in a little swim at the end. There are three Buddhist temples worth a visit, the Toan Thong waterfall is a good place to pause, and the Tung Tuk archaeological site showcases ancient Buddhist and Hindu statues and pottery. It's not just sand and pretty sunsets here!

Tranquility at its best is what you'll find in here. With its four kilometers of palm trees, soft sand, and turquoise waters, this is an amazing place to snorkel for a bit, before heading back to shore to enjoy the view. All this is possible thanks to typically low and calm tide of Khuk Khak.
