Ana V's City Tips

  • Every famous designer from Colombia has a boutique in the Cartagena's Old Town, and Bocagrande, the new downtown, also offers excellent shopping options.
  • There are not a lot of supermarkets in the old downtown, but you'll find more options near Venezuela Avenue where you will find more options.
  • The traffic in Bocagrande can be complicated in the midday and after 6pm. It's best to visit the area earlier in the day.
  • Colombia is famous for its emeralds, so pick up a special gem as a souvenir of your trip!

Surrounded by Las Murallas, thick 16th-century walls built to protect colonial Cartagena from enemies, the magical old city is a network of pretty streets and cheerful plazas. Among the many churches, restaurants, and palaces of the city is a treasure trove of shopping, from luxury boutiques to street vendors. You'll find some of the best shopping near Calle de la Estrella, Calle del Arzobispado, and Santa Teresa Square.

Las Bovedas, or 'the vaults', is the place to buy typical handicrafts near San Diego Plaza. Built in the late 18th century, these 23 dungeons were used as storerooms of military provisions and later as a prison. Today, they house little shops where artisans sell their crafts.

Originally known as 'Plaza de la Iglesia,' and then 'Plaza Mayor,' Plaza Bolivar now honors Simon Bolivar, the famed military leader who played a major role in freeing South America from colonial rule. There is a monument to 'El Libertador,' as Bolivar is known, in the middle of the park, you'll often find palenqueras selling fruit here. There are designer boutiques along Baloco and Inquisition Streets, behind the plaza.
