kuletgin's City Tips

  • The inhabitants of Istanbul are helpful, kind and speaking English because English is taught both in state and private schools so every one knows. Municipality of Istanbul and ministry of culture has a lot of " info bureaus " in all corners.
  • Anyone who enjoys trying &tasting local food, Turkish cousine is the best choice. Some meals are spicy so keep away in the beginning and try to have side streets resturants. Major sights are full of local food restarurants but are more expensive. Side street restaurants serve better services than the others.
  • Anyone who would like to enjoy Istanbul, three days are recommended ; Day 1 : European side where Topkapı Palace, St. Sophia, Basilica Cistern, Blue Mosque, Hippodrome, Grand Baazar, Rustem Pasha Mosque, Spice Bazaar, Dolmabahçe Palace and the coumns are located. Day 2 : Asian side : Beyleberbey palace, Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, III. Ahmet Fountain, Bosphorus Bridges, Maiden Tower and Bosphorus trip. Day 3 : In the morning , Panoroma 1453, city walls, Eyüp & Piere Loti hill, Taksim square. In the afternoon , shopping in grand bazaar & Spice market for traditional & Turkish souveniers and Taksim for textile products with cheap prices.
  • St. Sophia , Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar, Rustem Pasha Mosque, Topkapı Palace, Roxalene Baths and some small old pavillions are in the old part of Istanbul and ecah of them are in short walking distances so never hire a cab or a taxi, if you are old, get a tram.
  • Barganing is the ideal way before shopping, be careful for pick-pocketing, trams are crowded but the announcements in English so listen them carefully, wlaking the best option in imperial Istanbul which is called historical peninsula.
  • Istanbul has more than 50 museums worth visiting both in Anatolian and in European sights so museum card is recommended to purchase before visiting those places. On the other hand sometimes a long line in front of the well-known museum make the visitors bored so museum card should be the best to use the time efficiently without delay and wating in the line
  • The best way & the quickest way to explore Istanbul is to walk and use tram & metro systems. Istanbul card should be the ideal way to buy which is valid by all means of transport. Anyone can purchase in some public places from automatic machines with 3 eoros or 4 dollars and the credit can be lodaded depending on the desire amount. 10 or 20 or 30 Eouros will survive for to-three days. Istanbul card is used underground, metro, city buses, trams.

Mihrimah Sultam Mosque is one of the beautiful mosques located in asian side of Istanbul with endengared gravestones & sarcophagus. It has also two shrines in the courtyard. A beautiful Ottoman fountain is situated in front of the mosque.
