Guide to Richmond-upon-Thames Outdoors

Richmond is so different from the normal idea of London that it's hard to believe this quiet, peaceful area is on the tube map. Far removed from the madness of Oxford Circus, the glass and skyscrapers of the Square Mile, and the tourist madness of Knightbridge, Richmond is beautiful and green, with wide open spaces, ponds, parks, and gardens. That's why it's the perfect destination for bright days, stretching your legs and breathing in some fresh air.

Nina F's City Tips

  • Richmond is an upmarket area of London, with some beautiful and very expensive houses. It's great for daydreaming — and keep an eye out for celebrities too!
  • Bring a camera! Richmond is beautiful, with a huge variety of scenery to take in and capture on film.
  • Pack your walking shoes and maybe a raincoat. Richmond is a great place for long contemplative strolls, but you may encounter rain.
  • Richmond is very well connected via the District line, Overground, and National Rail, making it an excellent destination for a day trip.
  • Richmond Park

    Nina F Says:

Richmond Park has it all, from a golf course to dusty trails for horseback riding. You'll have endless fun exploring the variety of terrain, including a dense plantation, tall bracken, forests, wide open grasslands, rolling hills, and more. From the highest point, you can see as far as Wembley and all across London - it's quite spectacular!

    Tips
    • Keen cyclists can always be found cycling laps of the park. The main road loop is about seven miles all the way round, with undulating hills (and often quite strong headwinds).
    • Richmond Park welcomes dogs; just check to be sure that it's not rutting or breeding season for the deer, as they can become aggressive towards dogs if startled.
    • This is a great place to picnic, but there are also a couple of cafes in the park.
    • Keep an eye out for deer and bright green parakeets!
    • Enter via Richmond Gate. If you're driving, there is a free car park.

A popular wedding venue, Pembroke Lodge is an impressive Georgian Mansion set within Richmond Park. The Tea Room here lays out quite a spread for the traditional English afternoon tea, and the lodge also offers classic refreshments in The Butler's Pantry, within the elegant Georgian rooms. It's a real treat to round off your trip to one of Britain's best-loved parks!

    Nina F Says:

Danieli is an authentic Italian gelateria, located on the edge of Richmond Green. It has earned legendary status among locals, and tourists visiting Richmond are always keen to visit - the ice cream is award winning and quite fantastic! The ingredients are of the highest quality, the flavours are unusual but incredible, and the service is always friendly.

    Tips
    • During summer, there are two Danieli shops selling ice cream, just a few doors down from each other; in winter, one of them transitions into a chocolate and sweet shop.
    • During summer, the queue for ice cream can stretch right out the door, but don't be disheartened - this ice cream is worth the wait, and the queue moves quite fast.
    • Grab an ice cream and find a spot on Richmond Green to enjoy it. During summer, you may also be able to watch a game of cricket.

It's a great spot to pick up a picnic or snacks to fuel your Richmond ramblings. I for one can never walk past the juice bar or bakery section without picking up something delicious!

A garden centre, tea room, homeware shop and smart restaurant all in one, Petersham Nurseries is a short walk from Richmond, but is a must-visit if you're in the area. It's not often that you get the chance to enjoy tea and cake while sitting in a greenhouse surrounded by plants and flowers!

    Tips
    • Despite its name, The Café is actually a smart restaurant. It's very expensive but the quality is exceptionally high. Reservations are a must.
    • For a more casual dining experience, head to The Teahouse, which serves savoury items (such as soup, salad and quiche) alongside tea and cake (the slices are huge!).
    • Load up a tray with tea and cake in The Teahouse (it's self service) and find a pretty spot in the greenhouse to enjoy your treats.
    • Dogs are allowed.
    • When you finish eating, wander through the plant nursery and shop - they both sell delightful things.
    • The walk from Richmond train station to Petersham Nurseries will take less than half an hour. Follow the river and walk through Petersham Meadows. (It is accessible by car too.)

Ham House is a half-hour walk from Richmond station, along the river. Reputed to be one of the most haunted houses in Britain, the 17th-century mansion was transformed by the Duke and Duchess of Lauderdale and is considered to be one of the grandest Stuart houses in England. It is internationally recognised for its impressive collection of rare and unique furniture and art, much of which was acquired 400 years ago, and it's surrounded by formal, beautifully restored 17th-century gardens - definitely worth a wander.

Wander through the tropical and temperate glasshouses, discover plants you never knew existed, admire the ornamental buildings, or grab a bite in one of the cafes.

Initially built as a retreat from crowded 18th-century London, Marble Hill House is a stunning Palladian villa set within 66 acres of riverside parkland. Historic features such as an ice house and grotto are waiting to be discovered in the grounds, and the interior design was the height of 18th-century fashion, featuring lots of exotic Chinese elements that had gained popularity through England's increasing trade with China. Marble Hill House will certainly delight lovers of art, design and horticulture.
