TravelElis's City Tips

  • Haggling is only common and accepted in antique shops or second-hand markets.
  • Enjoy your shopping in the city center on Saturdays and Sundays when the streets are turned into pedestrian areas.
  • Keep a close eye on your belongings when shopping in the crowded street markets.

This quadrilateral area bordered by Piazza Maggiore, Via Rizzoli, Via Castiglione and Via Farini is made up of tiny and charming cobblestone streets. Once the site of the local market during Roman times, it is now brimming with delicatessens, antique shops and designer clothing boutiques — all with a decidedly local vibe.

On Fridays and Saturdays, the Montagnola Park and Piazza VIII Agosto area comes to life with a big local market: La Piazzola. More than 400 stalls pop up here, selling everything from vintage clothing to handmade jewelry to ethnic handicrafts. It is an excellent spot for shoppers and a colorful and lively place to experience in general.

This is a great delicatessen offering a wide range of local products and wines. You can't leave Bologna without a tortellini bag in your luggage, and this is the place to buy it! Besides amazing home-made pasta, balsamic vinegar, olives and Parmesan cheese, you will find a very special atmosphere here.

Though the weekend crowds may deter some, this charming artisan food market is well worth an off-peak visit to wander among stalls packed with fresh sea food, quality salami and delicious pastries. In the Middle Ages it was a meeting space for merchants, and has been refurbished in recent years to resume its old function.
