Lara V's City Tips

  • Stay away from the tourist track - food is normally quite expensive and of poor quality where the crowds are. Get lost deliberately and try dining in the quieter side streets.
  • Keep a close eye on your belongings in crowded areas such as Las Ramblas, and keep your bags in sight while dining.
  • Pair your meals with Catalan wine - those from Priorat and Penedes are my favourites.
  • Mercat de la Boqueria
    Farmers Markets

    Lara V Says:

This market is foodie heaven. From fresh fish to food-to-go, you can find all types of dishes and ingredients here. Although Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria is probably one of the most famous markets in the world, many vendors are still traditional farmers, who still come to the market to sell their outstanding products, just as they've been doing for decades. You simply can’t leave Barcelona without visiting it!

A traditional Valencian beverage made from tigernuts, the Spanish Horchata tastes different from the Mexican version, which is made from rice. Although the drink is originally from another area in Spain, Barcelona's Horchatería Sirvent is famous for its own special recipe. Give it a try!

If you’re looking for an incredible and truly memorable dinner, Tickets is the place to go. This fantastic restaurant, owned by Albert Adriá, is one of the trendiest in town, offering a spectacular variety of savories that will lead you on a guided taste-tour through the gourmet world of the Adriá brothers. Just make sure you save some space for desert - the owner used to be the pastry chef of El Bulli (one of the best restaurants in the world), so expect something extraordinary!

I’m sure you can easily picture yourself enjoying seafood paella, with a glass of red Spanish wine in hand and an ocean view in your gaze. Pez Vela is that very dream come true! Located in Barceloneta, this beach bar stands out from the crowd, thanks to its wooden walls and stunning views over the sea. Paella and salad here are guaranteed to make your day.

Food TV programs are becoming increasingly popular in Spain, and one of the most popular TV chefs is Jordi Cruz, the resident chef at ABaC Restaurant (located in the ABaC Hotel). He received his first Michelin star in 2002 - at only 24 years old - and his cuisine continues to get better and better. A must-try for all real foodies!

Fun, original and highly recommended for all true seafood fans, La Paradeta El Born is a very tasty, if unconventional restaurant. Once there, you’ll find a huge display of fresh – sometimes even alive - seafood. Simply choose the items you want to eat, plus sauces to accompany them, and wait for your food to be cooked. You can't get fresher than that!

Flax&Kale is my newest discovery on the Barcelona dining scene. It caught my attention because of its stunning decoration and the originality of its menu, which specialises in a "lexiteriana diet" - something close to veganism, but which also includes blue fish. If you're looking to try something really new, look no further.
