Bodies of Water
This natural park is the most visited place in Lanzarote. The island's dramatic volcanic nature shows its magnificence here, and there are two options for experiencing it. The coach ride will take you through narrow roads and craggy mountains, with incredible views offered throughout. Or, for a slower exploration, you can opt for a guided walk from the visitor center.
The area next to Timanfaya National Park is full of wineries. Lanzarote’s wine is the result of hard work, with everything having to be done by hand due to the volcanic rock walls that protect each plant from the wind. While there are many interesting wineries in the area, El Grifo is the oldest in the Canaries. Enjoy a break in this family vineyard and you’re sure to develop an enduring love for their wines!
Lying close to the wine region, Monumento al Campesino is considered one of the main crossroads on the island. Cesar Manrique, a well-known local architect, designed the impressive building, and although that’s an important enough reason to visit, the real draw, for me, is the authentic Canarian cuisine served in the restaurant here.
Manrique is probably the most famous Lanzarote local. He lived for many years in New York before returning to help with the island's planning regulations, and it's thanks to his hard work that Lanzarote has been able to maintain its traditional essence despite the boom in tourism. Located in his former home, his Foundation is one of the beauties of the island.
This charming village is the best place to start your day. There are many shops around the church where you can buy reasonably-priced local products (try the Pantry store), and the fabulous breakfast at Cafeteria Cejas is sure to impress you with its delicious Canary flavors, as well as the design of the building itself.
Welcome to my favorite spot. This building, designed by the omnipresent Cesar Manrique, hides one of the most incredible views on the island. From the balconies above the cliff, it is possible to admire the magical Isla Graciosa, inhabited by no more than 600 people. While it is possible to visit this tiny island, you'd need to devote an entire day to it — which makes Mirador del Rio the ideal substitute for those pressed for time.
Haria is a charming village hidden in the mountains. There are a few viewing points from which to admire its beautiful white houses, but perhaps the most precious gem here is El Meson La Frontera. Though not a Michelin starred restaurant, it serves the best BBQ on Lanzarote, which makes a delicious change from the fresh fish favored by most of the island's restaurants.
There are not many restaurants in the tiny Caleta de Famara. Casa Ramon is probably the best option if you're looking for fresh fish and a bottle of local Canary wine.
Time for the beach! Southern Lanzarote boasts long beaches to walk on, plus plenty of options for snorkeling, swimming or simply relaxing. Playa de Papagayo is one of the greatest beaches on the island, and the small fee you're required to pay to access the area is more than worth it.
This is an unusual thing to see: a green lagoon just a few meters away from the sea. But everything is possible on Lanzarote! Although visitors are not allowed to walk on the beach itself, the scenery surrounding it is very picturesque, making it well worth stopping off for a photo or two.
Nice atmosphere and great local food — what better way to finish off a day of sight-seeing? Though somewhat pricey, this restaurant is perfect for special occasions, and the chef works wonders with local ingredients to create a delicious, modern twist on traditional Canarian cuisine.
