One Day Trip Whistler

93%
Found this guide helpful

Vancouver is my home town and in my opinion one of the most beautiful cities in the world on a sunny day. My wife and I like to go out and be around town especially on the sunny days. I thought I would write a guide for those who don't want to break their budgets but want to explore Vancouver's beauty and have a little left over for some fun.

Kevinofsurrey's City Tips

  • Hope to Hells gate is a pretty drive along the Fraser River and through many tunnels. I would recommend eating in Hope or even Chilliwack.
  • If you have time a car head up the Fraser Valley. Often over looked by tourists but it gets very beautiful around Hope. Make a trip of it and head to Hells Gate.
  • If you are into Asian Shopping don't miss Aberdeen Centre in Richmond. It has a good asian food court.
  • My favourites areas to eat in downtown are in Gastown and on Denmin Street. Lots of little restaurants to explore in these places. If you love cake don't miss True Confections
  • Gastown usually has the cheapest souvenirs in this province. Lots of shops and competition. (Downtown)
  • Queen Elizabeth Park has beautiful gardens and views. It is outside of downtown but you can take transit. Parking is free if you park on road near entrance and walk up path.
  • Cloud Nine (rotating) Restaurant is a great place to have a cocktail but I don't usually eat there. Too expensive and the food is only okay. (downtown)
  • Stanley Park is beautiful to walk around. Its about 9 km but no hills.(downtown)
  • If you like a day hike and are fit, the Garibaldi Lake hike has a big scenic pay off at the end of it. Warning its 9 km straight up. There is a camping site up there. Research plz
  • Give yourself enough time to stop on the way back from Whistler. Most of the view points that are any good are on the return trip.
  • Shannon Falls is worth stopping for.
  • The Sea to Sky Gondola is worth the money.
  • Grouse mountain Gondola is another tourist trap. You can get the same view for free by driving up to the view point on Cypress Bowl Road.
  • Capilano Suspension Bridge is a tourist trap and expensive. Lynn Canyon Suspension bridge is nice and its free.
  • Plan for a day trip to Whistler. You will need a car. Go up early. I suggest staying in Squamish not Whistler it is over priced in everything. The new Sandman in Squamish is nice.
  • Book hotel room in downtown for activities you plan in downtown then move out further where parking is cheaper or free. Look at Richmond and Burnaby for cheaper accommodations.
  • Parking is expensive in the downtown core. Consider transit for things you want to see in the downtown core, then rent a car for the days you want to explore outside of it.
  • When exploring Vancouver consider using transit and not renting a car unless there are lots of people in your group or mobility issues for someone in the group.

    Kevinofsurrey Says:

There is a great look out up the Cypress Bowl Road. Essentially it is the same view as Grouse Mountain Gondola but it costs nothing but the 15 minute trip up the road. When taking friends on tours I try to take them there in the daylight and in the evening to see Vancouver. This is a gorgeous overlook of Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.
