  • 1. 798 District, Beijing, China

Contemporary arts district built in the old shells of a giant electronics factory in Beijing, this area is a great day's explore for anyone interested in art or youth culture. Fantastic cafes like Cafe Pause which is run by two Austrians so you KNOW the coffee is good adds an easy ambience to the district. Great art that is often quite subversive, some of it not so great but A for effort, you get a real sense of the frenetic energy and power of being in this place at the centre of global change. (Better or worse.) The area reminded me of some of the ramshackle old art enclaves of Seattle.

  • 3. 3.3 Shopping Mall, Beijing China

Excellent shopping that isn't knock-offs! This mall is just around the corner from Ya Show market. when you leave Ya Show, go to the left, then take a left down the first side street which is lined with bars on the right hand side. (Must get back to these one day too!) 3.3 is down on the left. It's where the cool Beijing kids shop and has a fantastic array of cheap and cheerful on-trend fashion with an edge. There are occasional nuggets of real designer gear for a song here too. Be warned, if you are over size 10, only shop here for accessories!! (This was me. Got some nice gear, all the same...)
