Drams , food and culture

  • 1. Drams / whiskey

Famous for it's whiskey, Islay certainly lives up to it's reputation. There are ofcourse the famous Lagavullin's etc but take a look at the smaller ones. Each one adds a bit to your knowledge and entertainment.
I highly reccommend Caol Ila distillery. The still house has large windows overlooking the beautiful island of Jura.
The older man who shows you around does it in a friendly manner and you can tell he loves his job.A visit here will have you laughing and enjoying the free dram

  • 2. Finlaggan

This is an independent trust looking after the home of the Donald's, The Lord of the Isles.Only a few ruins are left, the most important being the church with the grave on a Clan Donald farmer. The stonework on the grave is remarkable and conveys a sense of history. The settlement overlooks Loch Finlaggan.Let your imagination run and you can easily see the galleys moving out from here and the Donalds feeling safe in this area.
If there was one place I ask you to seek out in Islay then this would be it.

  • 3. Food

    1. Port Charlotte Hotel. A homely feel to this hotel and one which has high standards. The food was first class and it won my best seafood chowder on the trip. We all loved this place, especially relaxing afterwards in the large comfortable sofas , drinking our coffee, relaxing after our first class meal
    2. Harbour Inn. Once again a lovely meal.Funnily enough we loved the waiting area where we could sit and watch the sea.The dining area was less spectacular.
We also had food at the bar here and I would also reccommend it for lunch

Overalll Islay had excellent seafood, steak and venison.
