Our big fat Greek Bongo odyssey

Jun 13, 2013  Europe on wheels
0.0 of 5 bubbles based on 0 votes

21 days, 14 countries, rain, thunder, sun, sea, mountains ...

  • 1. Colmar
    Colmar, Haut-Rhin

Nice riverside camping, a good transit stopover.

  • 2. Munich
    Munich, Upper Bavaria

Has a decent campsite close to the city, very heavy rain when we where there and unfortunately the bar was closed.

  • 3. Vienna

Good city campsite with easy bus/metro links. The city itself has loads to offer - art, parks, museums and of course cake.

  • 4. Lake Balaton
    Somogy County, Southern Transdanubia

Lots of campsites around the Lake and very busy in the summer. Out of season was more chilled and the site we found in Balatonelles was perfect - pitch right by the lakeside and a fabulous sunset.

  • 5. Belgrade
    Belgrade, Serbia

Only one campsite 10km south of the city. Small and basic but very friendly, enjoyed our time there.

  • 6. Skopje
    Skopje, Skopje Region

Campsite is next to a hotel east of the city just off the motorway. A little noisy but well appointed and hotel has a nice bar with very cheap beer. You might find the stray dogs upsetting.

  • 7. Delphi
    Delphi, Phocis Region

3 campsites nearby, we stayed at Apollon which had great views across the valley to the sea. The archaeological site was 1.5km away and a fabulous place. Get there early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

  • 8. Athens
    Athens, Attica

Busy city, campsite on the west side towards the port. Bus and metro takes 35 mins to the Parthenon (tip it is closed on Sunday and opens at 1.30pm on a Monday). Fantastic vibrant city - make sure you find Brettos ouzo bar.

  • 9. Elafonisos
    Elafonisos, Laconia Region

Great campsite on this little island reached by a small car ferry. Site is on a peninsula between two beaches.

  • 10. Gialova
    Gialova, Messenia Region

Decent campsite right on the seas edge, very friendly with a large restaurant.

  • 11. Ioannina
    Ioannina, Ioannina Region

Lakeside campsite, not bad. 1km walk into town. Very different from Greek tourist hotspots. A university town so vibrant and fun, lots of bars and a chilled atmosphere.

  • 12. Kamping Pa Emer
Kamping Pa Emer, Kavaje, Tirana County

Best campsite of our trip. Small and simple but a fabulous location. Pitches directly on the beach with unspoiled views of the Adriatic. A little hard to find but worth the effort

  • 13. Lake Shkodra Resort
Lake Shkodra Resort, Shkoder, Shkoder County

Another fab Albanian campsite, on a lake, quiet and peaceful. Has a lovely restaurant attached with great food and even better local wine.

  • 14. Split
    Split, Split-Dalmatia County

Huge city campsite, a way out of the town centre. Very well appointed and family focused. Was full even in early June so booking advisable if you have a large van/motor home. We were able to squeeze our small camper into a little space. You can hire scooters to buzz about.

  • 15. Rovinj
    Rovinj, Istria

Beautiful fishing village, absolutely stunning. A must go destination and somewhere we will return to. Lovely sitting on the harbour in the evening sipping wine. Campsite approx 700m walk so very handy. Has 1200 pitches so expect it is busy in the summer.

  • 16. Lake Garda
    Lake Garda, Italy

Lots of camping options here, we stayed on the Sirmione peninsula. Nice site, close to lots of bars and about 2km from the old town at the end of the peninsula. Downside - lots of midges.

  • 17. Charolles
    Charolles, Saone-et-Loire

Small municipal site with a pool. Used as a stopover in the pouring rain so not much more to say.
