If you have a week or two to visit Florence and Tuscany, here is a recommendation. Use Florence as a base and make sure to stay at least three to four nights, ideally. A hint, the Otrarno side of the river is a little quieter, better value and less touristy, yet just over the bridge from the centre. If driving, head due south out of Florence through Chianti on the side roads, through Chianti en Gaole and Rada in Chianti. It is a beautiful drive. Continue south through Asciano for more scenic driving, and then settle in for three or four days somewhere near Pienza. Use that as a centre to visit Montepulicano, Pienze, Monticchiello, and Montalcino. After that, head to somewhere near San Gimignano and stay for three or four nights and use that as a base to visit Siena, San Gimi, Volterra and Monterigionni. That will give you the best of the Tuscan hill towns, and the nicest courtryside. If you have more time, then you can also go to somewhere near Cortona and visit Cortona and Anghiari.
