  • 1. Brindley Beach Rentals

One-week house vacation rental with dog. They had super affordable rates for off-season rentals oceanside in Corolla. The total price ended up lower than competitors even with our dog fee ($225) and they were flexible about their size limit to accommodate our 90lb mutt (didn't inquire about breed either). We booked almost exactly 48 hours in advance, with relatively few technical problems (were upgraded to an even nicer property free of charge when the other property's owners had invited friends out the same week - a complication of our last minute booking). Helpful staff, nice rentals, with smaller homes available so that we weren't paying for too many extra rooms.

  • 2. Duck Donuts
    Duck Donuts, Duck

Delicious, cheap donuts - piping hot, cake donuts that are hand-dipped and made to order. Open 7 days a week at 7am. About $7 for a half-doz.

  • 3. Pizzazz Pizza of Duck Incorporated
Pizzazz Pizza of Duck Incorporated, Kitty Hawk

Open on a Monday night in the off-season (which is a big deal - most places are closed). Ordered a custom large for $26 and it was done in about 10-15 minutes. Just fine for our at-home movie night

  • 4. Harris Teeter, Corolla NC

Perfectly normal Harris Teeter. Prices were on-mark for the Harris Teeters in Washington DC, which of course means more expensive than most U.S. suburbs. There are conspicuous gaps in inventory due to off-season scaling back, but the product breadth is there, just maybe not as many options as they'll have in the summer months. Nice staff, surprisingly awesome seafood counter, tons of cheap wine choices, and a bunch of small-sized products for vacation renters. Pet section has dog bags and lots of chewies, though most are not carpet-safe.

  • 5. North Banks Restaurant & Raw Bar
North Banks Restaurant & Raw Bar, Corolla

Ate only appetizers for dinner - highly recommend the crab "bombs" and the Caesar salad, drinks were great. Though delicious, the oysters Vincent only tasted like bacon. The firebugs (crawfish tails with jalapenos) were delish too. There aren't many tables, so even in the off-season we waited for 15 minutes for table for two on a Wednesday. It's in the Timbuk II shopping area, so there's stuff to look at while you're waiting for your table pager to go off.

  • 6. Red Sky Cafe
    Red Sky Cafe, Duck

Went for a delicious lunch! Fish tacos and blue ocean (tuna) burrito were delicately treated and simple. Nothing fancy, but everything was fresh and delicious. Also excellent service and yummy dessert
