Trip List by Dble-D

2 week+ US Western National Park Loop

  • 1. Las Vegas
    Las Vegas, Nevada

There really isn't a better starting point in my mind for a roadtrip. I have based out of Vegas a few times for a few reasons. Cheap flight, available and reasonably priced rental cars and I like to stay in Vegas. Can't beat the food and the shows. We statyed in Vegas for a couple days then took a taxi to the airport to pick up the rental car. Rent by the week if you can you'll save over adding 3-4 days.

  • 2. Death Valley National Park
    Death Valley National Park, California

Take 160 out of Vegas toward Pahrump hitting 190 through Death Valley National Park. The day we were there it was 112 so be ready when you step out of the car to be fried. Nice visitor's center and great views.

  • 3. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, California

Heading due West continue from DV on 190. Take 395 South to 178 West to Bakersfield then head North where I overnighted in Fresno. Freson is a good place to head out from to get a jump on traffic headed to Sequoia and Kings. I went South in the morning taking 198 in going to Sequoia then Kings. The roads are curvy and expect some traffic delays.

  • 4. Yosemite National Park
    Yosemite National Park, California

Take 180 then head North on 41 into Yosemite. The views are breathtaking as you enter the valley through the tunnel so have your camera ready and be ready to pull over as there's not a view like it. One very interesting sight to see is the rock climbers on the side of El Capitan so stop and give a look. If you see people stopped with binoculars looking up at the rock faces then they are probably watching climbers.

  • 5. San Francisco
    San Francisco, California

Stopped here on the way North toward other parks. China Town, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge are worth your time. Be ready to pay out the nose for parking your car in the city but what else are you going to do???

  • 6. Redwood National Park
Redwood National Park, Redwood National Park, California

Very good drive heading North out of San Francisco toward Redwood on 101. You'll see lots of big trees and wind your way through many excellent views are you work North. Once you get to Crescent City head North East on 199 toward Oregon.

  • 7. Crater Lake National Park
    Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Headed down 5 South to 234 to 62 heading due North into Crater Lake. Beautiful place one of the most interesting I've been to. The water is a blue that has to be seen. Left Crater Lake continuing North to 138 over to Roseburg.

  • 8. Seattle
    Seattle, Washington

We were running low on time and needed a day to relax so we didn't go to Olympic or Rainier. Pike's Place Market and the Fish Ladder are good stops while in Seattle.

  • 9. Glacier National Park
    Glacier National Park, Montana

Head East on 90 until you just about can't take it any longer and you'll find yourself at St. Regis. Head NE on 135 to 28 and head toward Kalispel where we stayed all night. Going to the Sun highway in Glacier is one of the best moments of all this trip and is worth your time and effort to see. Amazing. When you get to St. Mary head South on 89 and then to 15. We overnighted at a place called Fairmont Hot Springs in Anaconda and although the hotel won't blow you away the set up with the springs and huge hottubs was worth the stop.

  • 10. Yellowstone National Park
    Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Take 90 to 89 and head South into YellowStone. I liked going through the large arch that when you look back into history you see. The vast open spaces, flowers and wildlife are hard to beat but there are large number of people cramming into small parking areas and it at times can get frustrating when you are behind busses and rv's creeping along. Join in a Bear Jam and jump out and take some pics, everyone else does. We circled around ending up down at West Thumb after seeing Old Faithful, Paint Pots and more. Long day or two here. Head S on 191/287 toward Grand Teton

  • 11. Grand Teton National Park
    Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Take the road on the inside of the park as the views are great. Once out head South.

  • 12. Salt Lake City
    Salt Lake City, Utah

Heading South on 26/89 you will be on the Idaho/Wyoming border as you go toward Salt Lake. Once in Salt Lake take time to go visit the Copper Mine, Great Salt Lake and the Temple.

  • 13. Canyonlands National Park
    Canyonlands National Park, Utah

After leaving Salt Lake City head South on 15 and just North of Spanish Fork head E/SE on 6 toward I-70 and Green River. Once on 70 Head East to 191S. Once on 191 drive South to Canyonlands. You will be frsutrated by the amount of time it takes you to get back into Canyonlands but it's worth the effort.

  • 14. Arches National Park
    Arches National Park, Utah

Once back out on 191 which will again seem like forever it's not far down to Arches. Take the time to appreicate this one. I've been to quite a few and I can say this is one that make you stop think about how small you really are in the big picture. This visit was my third time back.

  • 15. Capitol Reef
Capitol Reef National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

After Leaving Arches drive South on 191 toward Blanding and then hit 95 driving North West through Red Monument toward Capitol Reef. Hit 24 and make sure you stop and look at the ancient drawings on your way through.

  • 16. Bryce Canyon National Park
    Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Very scenic drive on 12 heading South West toward Bryce. Sometimes you hit a place/park at the "perfect" time. A rain storm had just come through so there weren't many people out and a rainbow was the backdrop when we were there. Very different formations and once you see it you'll appreciate it's beauty. Nice place.

  • 17. Zion National Park
    Zion National Park, Utah

When you look at the US, Southern Utah to me is as beautiful a place as there is. There are desolate places and desert like climates at many of them but the time you spend in this area will be time you'll value and remember. We were driving through Zion and a big horn sheep was standing 2 feet off the road which was something to remember. The rock formations and cliffs in Zion are great. The shuttle is time consuming but worth the ride.

  • 18. Grand Canyon North Rim
Grand Canyon North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Having visited both I can say that the North Rim is just if not better to visit than the more visted South side. Bright Angel Point trail is intimidating for kids but the views and experience compared to the South side to me was night and day. I will go back and stay sometime on the rim in one of the cabins there. Very nice.

  • 19. Hoover Dam
    Hoover Dam, Boulder City, Nevada

Stop on your way back to Vegas or run out to see it if you can work it into your schedule.

  • 20. Las Vegas
    Las Vegas, Nevada

Back to base for a couple days of good eating, sun and NO driving. If you can do it in less than 14 days you are better than me. Right at 4,800 miles which doesn't make the rental car companies happy but you'll see things you won't see if you fly. I used Priceline.com Paid around $12 a day then upgraded to a Chevy Traverse at the airport. Much better than a car when you have 3 kids in the back....... Have fun out there!
