  • 1. Pompey's Pillar and Serapeum
    Pompey's Pillar, Alexandria, Alexandria Governorate

    Roman period pillar flanked by two re-sited sphinxes; built over Serapeum temple (temple to the Alexandrian God Serapis).There are toilets, gift shops and also remains of pillars and statues within the boundary wall. This site is a short walk from the catacombs.
    Entry charge is 20 EGP.
    Taxi: Carmous.

    The Roman theatre (Odeum or Amphitheatre) is the main attraction of this larger Roman period site, much of which is still under excavation and therefore only visible from a distance (such as a Roman bath house).     Well-organised museum in a restored villa with artefacts from all over Egypt. Start at the basement for the oldest remains, including mummies and work your way to the top of the building for more modern times up to the 20th century.

    Graeco-Romano period tombs. Some renovation work is in progress but it is still possible go enter the underground crypt.
    Located near the Corniche in Roushdy.

  • 10. Chatby Tombs

    Also known as Shatbi Necropolis, this is reputedly the oldest set of tombs in Alexandria. You can see where the coffins and sarcophaguses were stored. There are also some statues and parts of columns. The lower part cannot be entered as it is wet. The garden area is nice. Some impressive remains from this site can be seen in the Alexandria National Museum.
    Located next to the Youth Hostel in the Chatby area (west of the Library).
    Entry cost 20 EGP.

    Recently built mosque on a historic mosque site dating back to the 1700's.
