Best of the World: Places I Haven't Been To Yet

May 21, 2008  I love to travel, so why don't I just do it already?
3.5 of 5 bubbles based on 3 votes

I always thought I would travel a lot when I was an adult, but I've been an adult over 20 years, and my travel journal would be pretty empty, if I were keeping a travel journal. Time to change that. Prioritize, and then go!

  • 1. Rome - Mission accomplished! Visited January 2010 - no lines. Loved every minute.
    Rome, Lazio

The Colloseum, Spanish Steps, Vatican City, and everything else everyone should see before they die. I especially want to visit the Keats-Shelley house. And the rest of Italy.

  • 2. Stockholm, Sweden

I'd like to explore the country my grandfather left at the age of 3 to come to the U.S. through Ellis Island in 1908. While in the area, I'd love to see the fjords of Norway.

  • 3. Athens
    Athens, Attica

I must see the cradle of Western civilization now that I've seen Rome and Florence.

  • 4. Vienna

My sister and I are planning to take our spouses to the balls in January. As kids, we said we would go someday. We're far from kids anymore, so we're making plans!

  • 5. Giza
    Giza, Giza Governorate

The Egyptian Pyramids: I just want to see something created by humans that's 5,000 years old. OK, I need to learn more about this wish, and I want to.

  • 6. The Hebrides
    The Hebrides, Scotland

More walking tours I'd like to take, following some of the same paths taken by Samuel Johnson and his biographer, James Boswell. I got as far north as Hadrian's Wall once, but I've never been to Scotland. I'd like to visit Ireland, too.

  • 7. Snowdonia National Park
    Snowdonia National Park, North Wales

I'd like to take some walking tours through northern Wales and the English lake country (which I did visit briefly once), just as Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy would have. I'd like to ride the train to the top of Mt. Snowden, too.

  • 8. Beijing, China - Mission accomplished! Visited September 2010
    Beijing, China

Did it! I just returned from a quick trip to Tokyo and Beijing. My generous brother took my mom and me to the Great Wall. Words cannot describe. Tiananmen Square was memorable, as well.

  • 9. Galapagos Islands
    Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

I want to read Origin of Species and then visit the Galapagos on a small sailing vessel.

  • 10. New Orleans
    New Orleans, Louisiana

I'd like to take a literary tour of the south to include Oxford Mississppi (William Faulkner); Missouri (Tennessee Williams and Mark Twain), and New Orleans and Alabama (Truman Capote and Harper Lee). I'm sure there are more authors' villages I could visit, but those are the essentials for me. On the way, I'd stop in Atlanta to visit the zoo and the B&I gorilla, whom I visited in his cage as a child in Tacoma, Washington, not understanding why he was always sad and in the corner. Now he's living out the rest of his days in a habitat environment.

  • 11. New York City
    New York City, New York

I've been there once and haven't been back in over 15 years. There's so much more to see, even though I saw a lot. The same with Washington, DC. I'd like to stay at the Library Hotel, or the Algonguin, but I'll probably find a cheap but sturdy hotel and visit their lobbies. And I'll see a cabaret show at the Cafe Carlyle.

  • 12. Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park, Kilimanjaro Region

Both Tanzania and Madagascar: what a trip! To see all that wildlife and flora would be thrilling, and then to climb at least part of the mountain would be a blast. I do love hiking, but mountain climbing is something I've never tried. I hear this one's a possibility for novices.

  • 13. Whitsunday Islands
    Whitsunday Islands, Queensland

There's so much on that continent I'd like to see: Darwin, Alice Springs, Uluru, Kangaroo Island, Tasmania, Melbourne and Sydney. Plus, the Great Barrier Reef. And then New Zealand.

  • 14. Paris
    Paris, Ile-de-France

I spent 3 days in Paris with my family when I was 15. I've never been back. I want to visit Versailles, to see Louis XIV's palace and where the Treaty was signed. I also want to see more of the museums, and the catacombs. And the Tower.

  • 15. Machu Picchu - Machu Picchu is closed for awhile due to mud slides.
    Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley

Climbing the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan was exhilirating. I crave learning more about pre-Columbian culture. Combining the beauty of Peru and this ancient city seems like the perfect trip to me.
