New York City favorites from a (cheap) local

Dec 6, 2007  I live 5 minutes outside of Manhatten and I love it! I am also really cheap so I will not tell you to do anything expensive unless it is worth it.

I go into NYC a couple times a month for entertainment, so I'll let you know what's going on

I think they best way to get tickets is theatermania.com, you can pick up tickets at the box office and they have hard to get as well as discount tickets. you can also try stubhub.com; i've had bad experiences with entertainment-link.com. if you want to wait online for same-day discount theater tickets, i reccomend going to TKTS in the South Street Seaport instead of Times Square, much shorter line, plus you can do a morning in the SSS, you'll be going to Times Square later for your show. This season I really loved the musical Curtains for adults, Mary Poppins for kids. And you cant go wrong with the long-running favorites, especially for discount tickets: Lion King, Chicago, Mamma Mia, Rent, Phantom, Les MIs (its a revival technically, but not really), Spamalot, Hairspray, etc.

Open late Saturday nights. You don't actually have to pay the suggested price for a ticket, it's just a donation. I ususally give them a dollar. Check out the Egyptian wing, the Tiffany garden, and the featured exhibit.

Free ice skating in the winter, much less crowded than Central Park or Rockafeller Center. Fashion week in the fall

A must if you are going to be in the Village, even if you are not. I think it is the world's biggest used book store. It is so big, you may feel too overwhelmed to buy anything at first! But take your time and look around, it is full of treasures.
