A great way to make all your senses happy

  • 1. Szechenyi Baths and Pool
Szechenyi Baths and Pool, Budapest, Central Hungary

The Szechenyi Baths are a great way to spend an afternoon or entire day. You can soak in the pools, lie in the sun, hit the steam rooms or saunas, have a snack and even get a workout in.

  • 2. Szent Jupat

This restaurant is divided into three areas - the outside (seasonal) seating, the kind of hokey upstairs, and the super traditional authentic downstairs. All three serve the same menu from the same kitchen, so it's just a matter of what's available and what atmosphere you prefer. The food is traditional Hungarian - lots of meat, potatoes and pickled things - all served on enormous wooden plates. The male staff members are charmingly surly, while the few women are very very welcoming.

  • 3. Margaret Island (Margitsziget)
Margaret Island (Margitsziget), Budapest, Central Hungary

Margaret Island is a natural oasis in the center of the city. It's a great place for walking, running, soccer, frisbee or just lounging around. Don't miss the fountain shows (synched to light and music) at the south end of the island.

  • 4. The Palace of Arts

The Palace of Arts is the ultra modern arts complex opened in 2005. It hosts theater, symphony, dance, jazz and other performances. The building itself is a stunning bit or architecture situated right on the river.

  • 5. Marxim Pizzeria

This is literally the best pizza on earth. The pizza arrives on its own and you add the sauce - as little or as much as you like. The decor is Communist kitch and most of the other patrons will be about 15 years old and smoking heavily. But the food is just tremendous and the staff are awesome.

  • 6. Wickman's Pub

This tiny, out-of-the-way pub is one of the only places I know of in Budapest that brews its own beer. You share long wooden tables with other guests and sometimes the house pets as well. Quite often, someone will come by with a guitar and the whole place will be singing hungarian pop and folk songs.

  • 7. Zold Pardon

This outdoor dance club features two floors with different musical styles and stays open until dawn.

  • 8. Nagyi Palascintazoja (Grandma's Crepes)

Hungarian crepes, or palacsinta, are a bit more substantial than their French cousins. Nagyi's serves up numerous varieties with both sweet and savory fillings. It's a great and inexpensive meal at any time of the day. Most locations are open 24 hours.
