Insider news -- places to go, eat, and things to do for all ages

  • Category: Best of
  • 1. Zimmerman's Glass

Visit one of the few remaining artists of glass. Stop by at the shop to watch them as they make beautiful art glass pieces and buy an ornament, basket, or paperweight as a gift or reminder -- or custom order something. They're closed on Monday's, but you can buy an ornament at the Christmas Goose on the square.

  • 2. Civil War Historic Site

Just ouside of town south on Old Hwy 337 is the site of the only Civil War battle fought on Indiana Ground. Enjoy the small park for a few minutes and read the historical markers there.

  • 3. Ozzies

A unique shop with jewelry, decorative items and garden accessories located in an old cabin that used to belong to Indiana's first govenor.

  • 4. Magdalena's Restaurant

A great place to eat on the town square. Family friendly. Get anything from chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes to portabello mushroom sandwiches with sweet potato rounds.

  • 5. Old Capitol Building

Visit Indiana's first state capitol and see the old courthouse. Check for tour times. When you're finished, grab an ice cream soda at Emery's, close to the square on Walnut Street. It's an old-fashioned ice-cream shop.

  • 6. Wyandotte Cave

Located on Highway 62 east of Corydon is a cave run by the state. Enjoy the tours of the cave and the nature center.

  • 7. The Dock or The Overlook

Located in "old town" Leavenworth, Indiana, is a bar/restaurant that is popular with the locals and the motorcycle crowd. It's located on the banks of the Ohio River. If the weather is warm and sunny, go and eat outdoors. If the weather's not great and you don't like smoke, skip it and go to the Overlook Restaurant at the top of the hill in Leavenworth -- the new part. The food is better and cheaper at The Dock, but the atmosphere is more pleasant inside at The Overlook. If you eat at the Dock, stop at the Overlook anyway and enjoy the view of the Ohio.

  • 8. Kintner House Bed and Breakfast

Finish the day relaxing on the porch of the Bed and Breakfast, a historical building in downtown Corydon. The rooms are individually furnished and most, if not all, have private baths. If you go on a Friday evening in the summer, you can enjoy listening to a local band on the town square. The type of entertainment varies week to week.
