Three major airports serve the San Francisco area.
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is located 13 miles south of downtown, and offers non-stop flights to destinations across the United States, as well as to major cities in Asia, Europe, North American and South America. Oakland International Airport (OAK), which is located about 20 miles from San Francisco across San Francisco Bay, has non-stop flights to US destinations, plus Mexico and Europe. San Jose International Airport (SJC) is located 45 miles southeast of San Francisco and has scheduled non-stop flights to cities across the US, as well as service to Mexico and Japan.
If you’re price conscious, look at all three area airports when searching for airplane tickets. Thanks to the presence of low-cost carriers at each of these airports, travelers may be able to find cheap flights to a host of destinations, including Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York City.
Looking for a weekend getaway? Look no further than Southern California, including Los Angeles, San Diego and Santa Barbara. Non-stop flights from San Francisco airports are short (90 minutes or less) and frequent.
As the second-largest city in the United States, Los Angeles offers something for all tastes. Celebrities, sun and sand abound. Don’t miss taking a hike through Griffith Park, strolling through Venice Beach, going star sighting at one of the city’s hottest eateries and shopping on Rodeo Drive.
Just one visit to Santa Barbara is all it takes to fall in love with the city. From its colonial Spanish architecture to its beautiful beaches and mountains, Santa Barbara is a captivating town. Be sure to see the Santa Barbara Mission, watch the sunset while dining al fresco and take a day trip to the Santa Ynez wine region.
With 70 miles of coastline and a climate that’s mild year-round, San Diego is the perfect destination for visitors who want to spend their days outside. While you’re there, walk along the beach, take a surfing lesson, relax at an oceanfront restaurant or visit the world-famous San Diego Zoo.
A number of airlines fly between the San Francisco area and Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and San Diego, and cheap airfares are often available.
With a population that’s about one-third Asian, it’s no surprise that travelers to Asia have an abundance of flight options from San Francisco airports. Among the most popular destinations: Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Manila and Tokyo.
Non-stop flights from SFO depart to Asian cities that include Beijing (Air China, United Airlines), Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific, United, Singapore Airlines), Manila (Philippine Airlines), Qingdao (China Eastern Airlines), Seoul (Asiana, Korean Air, Singapore Airlines), Shanghai (China Eastern Airlines, United), Singapore (Singapore Airlines), Taipei (China Airlines, EVA Air, United) and Tokyo (All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, United).
