Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL), located 3 miles southwest of downtown Fort Lauderdale, is the primary airport serving Fort Lauderdale and Broward County. The airport primarily handles domestic flights, but does have some international flights. Travelers can fly non-stop to points in Canada, the Caribbean and some short-haul destinations in Central and South America. FLL is a hub for Silver Airways and Spirit Airlines, and a mini-hub for Allegiant Air and JetBlue Airways.
Fort Lauderdale travelers have two other airport options: Miami International Airport (MIA) and Palm Beach International Airport (PBI). Miami Airport is one of the busiest in the United States and the predominant airport for international flights to Latin America. Palm Beach is a smaller airport, but served by several low-cost carriers, including AirTran Airways, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines and Spirit.
Travelers from southern Florida who are looking for inexpensive flights are in luck—because so many low-cost carriers operate out of FLL, MIA and PBI, cheap fares are plentiful. In fact—you may not even have to fly a low-cost carrier to take advantage of their inexpensive fares. That’s because many of the full-service airlines will often match the low-cost carriers’ prices on the same routes.
JetBlue flies from Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach. Cheap airfares may be available to destinations including Los Angeles, New York, Port au Prince and San Juan. Spirit flies from Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach (seasonal). Inexpensive flights may be available to destinations including Boston, Cancún and Montego Bay. Southwest flies from Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach to destinations including Atlanta, Chicago and Las Vegas.
With flying times of less than two hours, Jamaica is a popular vacation destination for Fort Lauderdale-area residents. Caribbean Airlines, JetBlue and Spirit all offer non-stop flights between Fort Lauderdale and Kingston, as well as Fort Lauderdale and Montego Bay.
Jamaica offers year-round weather that is balmy and beautiful, with average coastal temperatures that range from 71 degrees to 88 degrees. When booking your vacation, there are a few things to keep in mind. High season—when hotel rates peak—starts in mid-December and lasts until mid-April. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
