Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is located about 10 miles northwest of downtown Sacramento. About a dozen airlines fly from Sacramento to destinations across the United States and in Mexico. The busiest routes from Sacramento take travelers Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, Las Vegas and Denver. Other popular destinations include Honolulu, Guadalajara, Los Cabos, Seattle and Cancun.
Budget carrier Southwest Airlines is accounts for about half of all traffic at Sacramento Airport—and that’s good news for travelers looking for cheap airfares. Even better: Southwest isn’t the only low-cost carrier. JetBlue Airways and Volaris also offer flights from Sacramento. Destinations served by Southwest include Burbank, Chicago, Denver, San Diego and Portland. JetBlue flies to Long Beach and New York. And Volaris flies to Guadalajara. When searching for inexpensive flights, keep in mind that you’re more likely to get a bargain if you’re flexible about your travel dates and carrier.
Mexico is a popular vacation destination for Sacramento-area residents. Aeroméxico and Volaris fly from Sacramento to Guadalajara, and Aeroméxico also offers seasonal service to León/Del Bajío and Mexico City.
Guadalajara is a major hub, and from there travelers can connect to flights that will jet them off to resort destinations such as Cancun, San José del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta.
