Travelers flying from the Oakland area have two airports from which to choose.
The Oakland International Airport (OAK), which is located five miles south of downtown, offers non-stop flights to destinations across the United States. Non-stop flights are also available to cities in Mexico and Europe. Top destinations for Oakland travelers are Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Burbank, Seattle and Phoenix.
San Francisco International Airport (SFO), which is located about 25 miles from downtown Oakland, is the largest airport in the San Francisco Bay area. (The airport handles more than four times the passenger traffic of OAK each year.) Dozens of airlines offer non-stop flights to points in the United States, elsewhere in North America, Asia, Australia and Europe. The top international destinations are London, Hong Kong, Seoul, Frankfurt and Tokyo. Top domestic destinations are Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Las Vegas and Denver.
A number of low-cost carriers fly from Oakland, and the airport is a mini-hub for both Allegiant Air and Southwest Airlines. The presence of these budget airlines helps keep airfares low for Oakland-area travelers. Allegiant flies to destinations including Phoenix and Provo. JetBlue Airways offers flights to Long Beach and New York, plus seasonal flights to Boston and Washington, DC. Norwegian Air Shuttle offers seasonal flights to Oslo and Stockholm. Southwest’s destinations include Albuquerque, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and San Diego. Spirit Airlines flies to Chicago, Dallas and Las Vegas. And Volaris has flights to Guadalajara with seasonal flights to Mexico City. When searching for cheap airfares, remember that prices tend to increase as the travel date approaches. You’re most likely to find inexpensive flights if your travel dates are flexible.
Hawaii is a popular vacation destination for Oakland travelers, and several flights are available between OAK and various Hawaiian Islands.
Alaska Airlines offers flights to Honolulu, Kahului, Kailua-Kona and Lihue. Hawaiian Airlines flies non-stop to Honolulu and Kahului, with seasonal service to Kailua-Kona and Lihue.
Many travelers will fly to Honolulu (travel time of about 5 hours, 20 minutes) and then catch a connecting flight to another island. From Oakland, non-stop flying time to Kahului is about 5 hours, 20 minutes, to Kailua-Kona is about 5 hours, 15 minutes and to Lihue is 5 hours, 35 minutes.
